Bleach, My Fated Sow

Her name is Bleach, and the reason for that is simple—her color makes me think of bleaching her, just a little humor that keeps me smiling whenever I see her.

Nanay once mentioned that if there was ever a black female piglet born, she would keep it as a sow. True to her word, she even paid me 4,000 pesos in advance, securing her stake before Bleach was even born.

When Brenda, one of my sows, went into labor, I made sure to be there every step of the way, carefully watching each piglet as it arrived. When Bleach came out, I was excited to see she was female. I immediately counted her nipples—16 in total! That’s quite rare and remarkable, especially since Brenda and Sweeney, my other sows, only have 14 each. I felt incredibly lucky to have a piglet with such a promising feature.

There was a time when my Tatay needed money, and my sister-in-law Grace, who was supposed to take Bleach, had just started a new job. At that point, it seemed like Bleach might end up in someone else’s care. But as fate would have it, I managed to pay Nanay back in full, and now Bleach is officially mine.

Sweeney and Brenda, both firstborns like me, share that special connection with me. Bleach, though not a firstborn, has her own unique tie to me—she was born in July, just like Miley, my mestiza pig. It’s a small detail, but one that makes me feel an even deeper bond with her.

I’m keeping Bleach, and I pray that she grows up to be a strong and healthy sow, following in the footsteps of her mother Brenda and grandmother Sweeney.
