Imagine a galaxy with a gazillion people! (a lot…).
These people have been living in a galaxy filled with wars and conflicts.
Most of these problems, if not all of them, arise from the fact that the great galactic queen and her sub-ordinates are corrupt individuals only looking for their personal gain.
So even when it is election time, people no longer trust the institutions that are supposed to be transparent about their votes.
In fact, there have been whistleblowers that have showed evidence of the corruption and most of them have been killed and if not, they are hiding and running away from the galactic queen’s army.
And the ones that they can’t catch, the galactic queen’s army pursues and tortures their family members.
They also create false evidence of wrong doing in order to damage the reputation of anyone who dares to go against the galactic queen’s will.
A pretty fucked up place…reminds me of somewhere…
Proof of Stake
Someday, out of nowhere, metallic boxes appear in many parts of the galaxy. Each one for every single inhabitant.
The instructions on the boxes are clear:
- Our only purpose, is to communicate the truth voted by all of the individuals that utilize us.
- Anyone can participate. (this decentralizes the power)
- Anyone who participates puts his life at stake. (have skin in the game)
- Anyone who is found guilty of tampering with a box dies instantly (this deters evil individuals)
- Anyone who follows the rules and is honest, gain a super rare mineral that can be exchanged for goods and services in this galaxy (this incentivizes people to do good)
Metallic boxes in this example are computers or nodes. Let’s call them validators. In real life, validators can be anywhere in the world with an internet connection. You may think, well that means if the government cuts off all of the internet then we are done for. But even in that case, we would still have the possibility of satellite internet…and with some human faith I’m pretty sure the galactic queen would face resistance from the people…we are not going down without a fight and nor she will.
The way these boxes work is kind of like gossiping.
Let’s say for example that there is a decision to be made intergalactically.
Should the queen be dethroned?
1. Yes
2. No
Let’s say that Alice votes “Yes”.
What happens afterwards is that her vote is communicated like a ripple effect. Imagine a drop of water making waves when it falls on another bigger body of still water.
Her neighbors are the first to notice her vote. Then, the rest of the town so on an so forth. This happens incredibly fast.
Now Bob, is somebody who is a queen fanatic. He still wants the queen to reign, maybe because he is getting perks or some sort of benefit. So, he decides to tamper with his box, so that all the votes that go through it, end up showing a vote of “No”.
You can imagine there could be many queen fanatics in this galaxy that would do this, but thankfully there are still many more queen haters.
So, once every single box receives the vote, the consensus makes evident that Alice voted “Yes”.
In practice as long as 51% of the population agrees on something. We are good to go
And the truth is added to a ledger inside the boxes
In reality what happens here is that it gets added to a block. These blocks are then chained together. Basically the more blocks you have on top of you, the more resilient the truth in those blocks becomes.
You can think of it like a massive Jenga tower, the more blocks you add on top of it, the harder it gets to remove block from down below.
And then, the rest of the box owners notice that one single vote showed that Alice voted “No”. That is the box belonging to Bob, the one he tampered.
Well, the evidence now is clear. Bob should die for being dishonest.
In reality, what is at stake is usually some form of cryptocurrency. This is a huge deterrent for anyone who wants to tamper with the network. Because nobody likes losing money!
Basically anyone who wants to take down the network would have to be able to find, corrupt most of the nodes(boxes) in the network and be willing to risk it all in one gamble that could potentially leave that person broke.
No system is perfect, but it is hella impractical to conduct such a coordinated attack. You would have better luck at winning the galactic lottery.
A new reign
Now everyone can take part in really important decisions without the needed for any more corrupt and centralized institutions.
The people now have the power to forge their own destiny and you have a society incentivized to do good instead of evil.
The queen and her followers were all executed by an army who realized the truth about her wrongdoing. And well, let’s say that even soldiers realized they were better off being honest and earning rare minerals than the scraps the queen gave them.
