I kinda fail to understand envy as an emotion. It's incredibly irrational and utterly pointless. I don't think you need to be envy of somebody to be competitive - not at all. The mere idea of being a better version of yourself every day should be enough.

Envy usually leads to destructive behaviour towards other people which is often a bad idea. If someone else has more (whatever that may be) than me, then he was just more talented, luckier, skilled or whatever. No need to frown upon it.
And when it comes to other people and their relationships: we don't own people (anymore) - so being envious of people because they have a better relationship among each other is highly irrational and should be treated as such: ignore it and move on.
