Fairytale Fantasia: An Amateurish Puzzle Review

Miss M. the youth librarian brought a puzzle from her personal collection into the library for staff and patron entertainment. This is a 1,000 piece puzzle made by Ravensberger entitled Fairytale Fantasia, and it is absolutely brilliant. The pieces fit together well, the art is crisp, and the details make every piece a miniature artwork.

OK, that may be a slight exaggeration, but honestly, not by much. Almost every piece had a unique and visually distinct element to help connect it to its mates once they were found. I have built puzzles that look great at a distance, but the pieces themselves are a bit fuzzy when it comes to detail. This one was not like that at all. I should note that many of the gradients and hues can still throw you for a loop when you try to gather similar pieces, though.

The theme was also great for the library, of course. Book spines and small pictures of famous literary scenes peppered throughout mean lots of mini-puzzles to assemble and connect, too.

All told, if you like puzzles, see if you can track down a copy. This one is sure to delight.

I enjoyed getting to help with the assembly of that puzzle, and wish I had had more time to work on it. It's truly one of the nicest puzzles I've seen. But I also remain fond of Charles Wysocki puzzles, as well as Verticalville, which was given to my husband and me for a wedding present many years ago. I have assembled it many times. It's now considered vintage and can be found on ebay and Poshmark.
