For today's #songoftheday it is time to dive into a trip hop classic by Cibo Matto.
This song first came into my life by way of a collection of videos by Michel Gondry who made the leap into being one of my favorite directors with his film Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless mind as well as being the man behind the camera for a number of the most influential music videos for an entire generation (Foo Fighters' Everlong, Daft Punk's Around The World, The White Stripes' I Fell in Love With a Girl to name but a few.) His whole music video collection is worth digging into honestly. So many great ones directed by him.
Cibo Matto's Sugar Water is just one example of his great direction work. Utilizing an unique split screen narrative in the video, it pulls you in pretty early and never lets off sucking you into the narrative just long enough to get the playful trip hop atmosphere time to dig it's hooks into you. Cibo Matto has a long history in electronic music and while the name might not be particularly familiar as the likes of Massive Attack or Tricky, you can spot touches of vocalist Miho Hatori as the voice of Noodle on the debut Gorrilaz record.
@ iamevilradio damn why can't more of their stuff sound like this?
Great post!
Thanks for tasting the eden!
