Shoot Film Review: Exam (2009)

in #review6 years ago (edited)

Hello gentleman, this is a Little experiment.

To the point, I never made a Film Review before and this is because my main interest are videogames and that is my main analysis area, but never are bad try something new, right? In any case thinking about that, I realized that exist one movie that maybe will be interesting to analyze and this movie is: “Exam”

And I see convenient to say that I will not say important “spoilers”, so you can read this post without preoccupation. So, let’s start with this “experiment”.

Released in June in 2009 and wrote and directed by Stuart Hazeldine this movie is a British psychologist thriller that was made in a particular way: The whole story happens in just one room.
Yes, just like you read it: just one room.

This film has a simple premise: We have one room and eight characters that must revolve one question from the exam in order to get a job in a multi-millionaire (and mysterious) company and in the first minutes from the film we can see one of his strong points:

Characterization.png

In any work of art with a story the characterization is one of the most important aspects; the characterization is the way who the writers can tell us things about the personalities of the characters without tell us anything and in this case, like I said since the first minutes from the film we can figure out the personalities of the important characters without problem and how will be the chemistry between them, which are a very good aspect if have in count the strange nature of the film. We can't expect that the characters will be something more than bidimensional, so a good characterization is a good way to give more charisma to the characters.

Also we can talk about the tension, we have this cast of characters and one objective, what is the answer? This objective supported by the chemistry between characters build the bases from the tension, we can see how the personality of one of the characters and his vision about the Exam and the how to get the answer crash with de vision and personality of another character, we can see how one of them believe that the correct way to find the answer is cooperation, while other character want to trick the rest and use them by his own benefit.

So, this film has good characterization and good building of tension, what’s about the rhythm?

Like I said, the objective is find the truth and the way to find the truth is thinking, all of these characters are genuinely intelligent which build a good rhythm with his reasoning’s. This is important because the sensation of waste of time could destroy the tension easily.

Now talking about waste of something, this movie isn't perfect; two of the characters don't have the same dimensionality than the others and feels like they are there without a good reason, the tension work in characters like "White" because we discover why he want the job, but like I said before we can't say the same thing about these characters who I don't reveal in order to don't spoil it.

This is an interesting experiment, a good writing exercise if you asking me and definitely isn't bad work, this film deserve your time? I think that yes.
It's a very interesting film and very enjoyable in the end of the day.
I can’t say more, go to see this movie if you have free time.

I'm sure that you don't will be regret.

This really was fast, isn't? Don't worry I will better with some practice. And like always please excuse my poor domain of your language, Im really sorry and of course all of yours are free to say something about that, any feedback are welcome.

Well, that's all, see you let's time! and the first image was taken from the film himself.
