It is with much gratitude to announce that AYC has offered Makina a wet berth for the winter in a back harbor here in Halifax!
The back harbor boasts an anti-icing system to allow wintering off the hard. For those new to my blog, the late summer and early fall were spent sailing a newly purchased Cabot-36 from Scarborough, ON to Halifax, NS; a passage of about 1200NM.
The sale of my property in Halifax closed on Nov. 15th and we are now officially Boat People; living full time on board Makina.
My Daughter and Son-In-Common-Law have their eyes on a new home, which is about a 25 minute walk from the Club where we are berthed. How convenient is that?!
They have other concerns which they plan to check out before making any moves on the property, yet they are doing some negotiating through texts with the real estate agent.
The market seems frozen and the new property has some issues which may not make it many buyers' first choice. It may be a good time to see if the housing market has more adjustments before committing. It seems a buyer's market.
So a few days after the first of the month Ronnie, the Yard Manager at AYC, gave us a berth in the back harbor and my new crew joined me for the move from its mooring at the gas dock where Makina had been since her arrival.
We practiced some drills. The plan was to position my Son-In-Common-Law at the new berth to await our arrival and take the line which my Daughter would be throwing ashore. We practiced tying off the line with my Son-In-Common-Law while my Daughter practiced moving the fenders from port to starboard to match the new berthing scheme.
With the engine purring my Son-In-Common-Law; and by then the Yard Manager and a past Commodore; pushed me off the Gas Dock. Bringing Makina in gear, we slowly motored off toward the back harbor. My Daughter moved the fenders expertly.
My Son-In-Common-Law, and with him the Yard Manager and past Commodore, were there to meet us and Makina was brought safely and softly to berth. A wonderful new crew was taking shape!
We moved most everything into storage and cleaned up things on our old property then settled ourselves on to Makina.
Got a life signal from the onion rings on the first night's arrival. Sending love to all and thanks to those that aided me on this passage!

Excellent! A boat is a vessel to be sure. Happy sailing when the season returns!!
Thank you kindly!
Look at that hair.. almost to swashbuckling pirate length... RRRRRR
Are you wintering on the boat?
Contemplating it. One would probably want a diesel boat heater installed for a full winter. My Daughter is looking for a replacement property yet the boat is taking the pressure off. Most of our house stuff went to storage.
I have been thinking of those kinds of heaters also but am unsure if they would be cheaper than propane. The fuel storage is my main concern.
Propane is used already for stove and oven on board. Storage would be a big factor. 100L of diesel can be stored in 5 plastic jugs lashed towards the bow.
Diesel is hard to get going. To freak me out a friend who was helping me with my furnace years ago put out his cigarette in a jar of furnace fuel we had drained from the carb. It worked. It freaked me out and made me see diesel and furnace fuel differently ever more. Diesel has been used as a substitute for furnace fuel in my landlubber days. Fuel tanks will be probably what brings us ashore when the time comes. 🤪
I saw my grandfather put a cigarette out in gasoline once! It blew my mind.
Wow! Now that is crossing the line in my opinion! 🤣
Agreed!
Wow, you're really making moves Nova!! Proud of you!! Love that onion ring, it's right up my alley. Heart Hugs my friend xoxo
