@bluemoon started a new challenge last week! 'SOMETHING ABOUT ME' and the rules are here. SAM
Use the tag #sam-saturday.
I love Broadway. When I was a young mom we lived in a small town in Central Wisconsin that had little to no culture. The nearest mall and movie theater was 70 miles away.
A friend invited me to go with her to New York to see a play. This was the mid 80s and I had never been anywhere without my husband, but it was an opportunity that I was not about to turn down!
Two other women joined us, and we had the time of our lives! And the trip became a tradition for the next 10 years!
We went for 4 days and saw a Broadway show each night. During the day we toured, shopped and visited museums and exhibits. By the time we went the second year we realized that we could see three night time shows on Broadway, and we could also add in a matinee. We saw shows that are still playing 30 years later (Phantom of the Opera) and we saw others (Legs Diamond) that closed after a month.
The glamor and the excitement of the city was contagious. By the third year we felt like we knew our way around. And we found that if we hung aound outside the theaters after the show was over we could often meet and talk to some of the stars of the show. It was such a thrill to talk to Maggie Smith and get her autograph.
We ate at places that we had only read about. Sardis, Delmonico's, the Russian Tea Room, Tavern on the Green, the Delegates dining room at the UN. High tea at the Plaza. And Windows on the World on the 106th floor of the World Trade Center- twice.
We took the ferry out to see the Statue of Liberty, we went on a carriage ride through Central Park, we went to the top of the Empire State Building, we saw the Holiday Extravaganza at Radio City Music Hall, and we went to the New York Botanical Gardens. We toured The Cloisters and we went to an Annie Leibovitz photography exhibit. We crammed things into every single second that we were there, right up until we had to get in a cab to get to the airport to come home.
It was something we all looked forward to every year. I was sad when it had to end but life got in the way and all of us moved in different directions. I literally moved from that town and the others all had big life changes. I've seen other shows over the years in London and San Francisco and Chicago, but it was New York that made me fall in love with theatre .

Great fun. I have been to several shows on Broadway and we watched many more of the traveling versions in New Orleans and Minneapolis. Musicals are so fun. Thanks for sharing #sam-saturday with us
I would have guessed that you were a theater lover too! Musicals are my favorite.
I think you enjoyed it a lot, sure being able to visit Broadway was a wonderful experience
I♥️NYC! I know you would love it and hope you get to visit someday too!
I know that everything will improve and I would love to know USA and France ... Traveling is wonderful💕
I didn't begin traveling until I was much older than you! I have faith that it will happen for you
I know I can travel. I'm only going one step at a time! I am still young and I think that right now it would be good to work and so then travel in the future.
That sounds like a perfect plan
I know I can travel. The goal now is to have a job, I would really love to have the food truck, for the moment I will try to sell cupcakes and cakes at home and try to collect money to fix the car and start with the food truck. Thanks so much for believe in me!💕
Lucky you! We’ve never seen a show in New York but we used to see Broadway touring companies in Biloxi, Mississippi, Los Angeles, and Sacramento, California.
We were “Le Mis” junkies for a while, dragging our kids along to see it several times.
Ha! Les Mis! Can you sing every word, too? My kids have also seen it more than once!
Sounds like you had a great expirence. I have not yet been to New York City. I can only imagine the arts expirences available there. I enjoy our local theatre in past years. Abbi does not do well in that setting so it has been years.
Love
My granddaughter loves Hamilton and knows every single word to every song in the play. For Christmas last year my son got tickets to take her to see it in Chicago, and I was shocked at how expensive tickets have become. No way would I pay $300 for a ticket.
Wow! I have been living on less than a broadway ticket price.
Love
I understand! My SS check is not much more than that!
@melinda010100 What a cool post and a very cool challenge by @bluemoon I shall have to keep this one in mind. I love going to live shows too. The atmosphere is always very exciting. I have treated my husband to an Il Divo concert on the 19th of this month for his birthday and we cant wait to hear them. They are my favourite classic rock band.
Oh that will be such fun, Trudee! I hope you do a SAM post! I lke reading them!
Thank you dear Melinda. I'm in the middle of one of two short breaks away and will not be online much but I look forward to doing the 'odd' SAM post in a couple of weeks time.
Hope you are away doing fun stuff! 😘
I was Melinda. Thank you. Taking photos whilst combining sight seeing and dodging the rain. It was just a short break but I'm going away again at the end of the week for 6 days.........and according to my information, should have internet so I shouldn't feel too deprived. (lol)
Sounds like you are finding a lot of fun things to do! Have a great time!
Thank you, @trudeehunter! You are welcome anytime.
Many thanks @bluemoon I'm away from home for a few days and have limited computer access and then will be on holiday for a week at the end of next week so will look forward to participation in your SAM challenge when I get back into routine.
Have a nice holiday! We are all here and we are waiting for you.
Thanks so much @bluemoon. We got home late last night so I'll get caught up before we go away again on Friday for a week. Hopefully I will have better access to the internet this time. (:
With pleasure! I've been out lately and I know what it is like.
howdy melinda010100! oh my gosh! what a wonderful tradition to have, you make me want to establish that tradition! Do you have a favorite play?
I wonder if those older Playbills are worth anything?
All of the musicals were my favorites! Starlight Express, Into the Woods, and of course Le Mis and Phantom. I loved Will Rogers Follies. Oh and Secret Garden. I doubt if the Playbills would be worth much, except to me for all the memories they hold. Now I really am going to bed. See you tomorrow!
it's been wonderful, God bless you!
We both accomplished what we wanted! A month ago I was in 12th Place, then 16th Place, 17th Place and now 9th and in the green! I'm happy. You are simply amazing my friend!
howdy today melinda010100! haha! hey we both are because we helped each other out, that was great! Congratulations, it takes quite a bit to get into the top ten. Now all you gotta do is keep talking to me and you can be there permanently! lol. It's a nice little steem bonus too. What's that position pay? 1 or 2 steem?
I really thought Glen was going for it this time but he was totally relaxing this week. I saw monster comments from him. but I set a personal record for character length but was down in number of comments because several people got shut down by the new system.
It certainly was a bonus for me and I appreciate all of your help! Asher paid out 1.5 steem for that position and I'm happy to have it. I was a little worried about coming up with enough to pay out prize money for the shadow contest this week, but I've got plenty. I was even able to lease some SP from blocktrades for one of my friends who was struggling to be able to make comments. It has been a good week and a lot of that is because of you. Thank you. Let's do it again!
yay! yes lets do it again, I am behind by a couple of hours because I was watching tv and lounging around with Mrs. J. so sorry it's so late. well it's early for me! lol.
I was able to delegate sp to two people who are poor and struggling but want to stay with steemit so that was really fun, neither of them had money to put in themselves, one is in Pakistan and the other one is in England.
what have you been doing tonight?
good posts I like the story
Oh my I had a big smile all the time reading your post my dear Melinda ! I could indeed feel you had all 3 the time of your life during this escape in Broadway !
and what a beautiful thing that you kept all the playbills, throughout these shimmering years !!
We really did have a fabulous time and created so many memories. At one point I had all of my play bills framed and hanging on a wall in the house that I lived in. I loved seeing them all the time. But then I moved out of that house and no longer had an appropriate wall. haha. Now they're just tucked away in a Cupboard, and it was fun to get them out and look at them again, it had been a while.
Great fun!
I have been to a couple of the Broadway shows and still have the playbills, but haven't been to one for a few years, the style and quality of the shows are amazing arent they
If I lived as near as you I suspect I would become a theater addict! My trips always included plane tickets and expensive hotel rooms! But if I would have had all that additional money to just spend on tickets, oh my! While there was something I loved about every single show that I saw, I think for me the most amazing event was when they landed a helicopter on the stage in Miss Saigon. That totally blew me away, it looked so real!
We did plan to go once ever three months for a show but then my wife got ill and isnt up to going to the shows so it came to a grinding Halt
Ohh yes Miss Saigon was amazing for sure
I am sorry. I didn't know that she was ill. There are so many things that get in the way of living the life we would love to live.
Yeah as one gets older age slows us down
You know how well I understand that!
What a wonderful life experience with your friends. You sure enjoyed the city with all that you were able to do. Fun!
Thank you! Creating this post brought back recollections of things that I hadn't thought about in years. We really did have so much fun.
It sure looked like it. Great to have had friends to share the memories with.
It is great idea.
You have a great collection, fantastic hobby for the soul :)
Greetings
Thank you! It is a great collection of memories, for sure!
It is my friend :)
That's really a cool tradition, I lived in a small town without theater. Never visit any in my whole life, lol
I hope you get to travel in the future... there are so many great things to experience in this world!
I've traveled to few places, but never has a chance to stay for so long, so I used my time to visit their cultural places. Indeed it's interesting to visit places as we can learn a lot during our travel. Hopefully one day I can visit Europe and US, as it would be something so different from us, Asian countries.
What a beauty, @melinda010100! Thank you, thank you! I don't know how long SAM will resist. Doesn't matter. It was an inspiration for such wonderful posts! Mostly I am glad that it has generated confessions and confidence that such things can be said about our existence.
Your escapades and your friends at NYC, Broadway to see those wonderful shows. I seem to see this in many independent American films. It was a wonderful time and I'm glad you told us that. My wife meets her friends at least once a month and go to shows. I find it very good for her.
I think SAM is a wonderful effort and I see no reason why it will not just grow and prosper! I'm really sorry I got my post out so late it was practically Sunday. I didn't give you a whole lot of exposure with mine in time for people to enter also. I think each week as people remember that Saturday is SAM it will grow more and more. Be patient! I'm still realizing how many people have never heard of The Shadow contest. It's hard to get exposure here, except among your own group of friends!
Yes, you are right. We have to be patient.
