Quantitative observations in scientific and technological research // Case applied to Engineering

in #science6 years ago

When we observe the environment, we focus our attention on something, a quality or property that interests us. That is why almost by inertia we use our senses or other external means built by man with the purpose of improving observation.

We can cite some examples of qualitative descriptions. How many times have we not heard this phrase: the water is salty, the moon is far from the Earth. What makes us think that human beings always have the need to compare an attribute or property of objects or events, this type of comparison is not enough for human needs if we can not quantify the amount of difference between the elements we are comparing .

That is why we not only compare the elements of nature, but based on that comparison we need to keep in mind the reference object to give meaning to the number we use to quantify the comparator element. Therefore, we do not only compare, but we do it with a reference object or event that people can know what it is, even if they do not have it in mind.

In this particular case I want to refer to the case of when we make observations in the field of science and technology, very specifically I want to cite this example of a quantitative observation: The drilling rig has a capacity to drill a considerable length of feet in length, and has a capacity of 3000 HP with a 200-foot-long drill rig, I referred to that particular example to show that when such observations are made it involves what we call measurement, which means that when we measure we are assigning a number to an object or event, considering another reference.

Evaluate the importance of measuring in science, technology and engineering. (Reflection)

Measurement is an important activity, there are events in nature that can not be explained scientifically if we can not quantify it, which means that a qualitative observation of the phenomenon itself should be associated with a quantitative one.

In the area of Engineering, measurement is very important, in the case of Oil Engineering there are a variety of drilling operations, for example when we supervise them, we end up observing them, after we observe them, in certain cases it is necessary to carry out some technical reports that would not have a clear support in their explanation but we argue with measurements, for example is drilling at 1000 feet, with a penetration rate of 50 feet / sec, a pump pressure of 60 psi, and a torque in the 100 lbs-foot string The report mentioned above would have no understanding if we removed the measurements, since we would not know how deep the well would be drilling, we would not know what penetration rate would be drilling, nor would we handle the operating pressure of the mud pump nor the torque exerted by the formation on the pipe string while drilling.
