Apple Inc. is designing iPhones and iPads for 2018 that don't use components from Qualcomm Inc. amid an escalating dispute between the companies, the Wall Street Journal reported.
The two companies are locked in a multinational legal dispute over the Qualcomm's licensing terms to Apple.
A source tells WSJ that Apple is considering building future devices with modem chips from Intel and possibly MediaTek because Qualcomm has withheld software that is critical to testing its chips in Apple's prototypes.
As per Qualcomm, "We are committed to supporting Apple's new devices consistent with our support of all others in the industry".
While MediaTek has not been confirmed to be a part of Apple's modem supply chain, it is a possibility that the Taiwanese manufacturer will be introduced if Qualcomm and Apple are not able to resolve their differences in time. However, in a statement to Reuters Qualcomm said it is providing fully tested chips to Apple for iPhones.
There have been issues going on between Qualcomm and Apple for months now. This is why Qualcomm CEO Steve Mollenkopf recently said he was positive Apple and Qualcomm would restore their friendship very soon.
Bernstein expert Stacy Rasgon said Apple's relocation is not entirely unexpected.
In the earlier days, the only model supplier for Apple iPhones and iPads was Qualcomm, from the last few years, Apple's modems are supplied by Intel, who is also the supplier of the processors for the Mac lineup.
"Samsung (Electronics Co) did this too. However Qualcomm didn't even understand until it was close to time to deliver" Samsung's phones, Rasgon stated.
