SciencePic # Microscopic Photography of Human Gut!!

in #sciencepic7 years ago

Hello my steemian friends !
This is my fourth post in the sciencePic series. Today i will show you all how our Gastrointestinal tract looks like in a microscope!
These photos are taken by Me and my friends through the microscope during Anatomy practical posting, at Nobel Medical College ,Biratnagar,Nepal.

Human Gastrointestinal system consists of following structure-

  • Oral cavity
  • Pharynx
  • Oesophagus
  • Stomach
  • Small intestine
  • Large intestine
  • Anal canal
I do not have photographs of all the parts, i will show you some of those i have.

Large Intestine

L.i.jpg
Fig.- Large Intestine, shows Numerous tubular crypts, columnar cells without villi, muscle coat

Large intestine - it consists of Appendix, caecum, colon and rectum. It's main function is absorption of water and electrolytes. In diarrhoea and dysentery it can not do so, which results in loss of fluid from the body.

Stomach Fundus

Stomach fundus.jpg
Fig.- Stomach fundus, shows columnar mucosal lining with gastric pits, thick muscle layer

Stomach is next to esophagus, it lies just below diaphragm. It has various functions- it acts as reservoir of food, it helps in grinding food particles into small pieces, neutralizes pathogens in food by its acid juice.
In Gastritis there is inflammation and damage of gastric mucosa(see the picture, it is normal). In severe case the wall may perforate.

Oesophagus

Esophageous.jpg
Fig.- Oesophagus, shows red mucosal lining, lamina propria and purple oesophageal glands

Oesophagus acts as food pipe that helps in passage of food from oral cavity to the stomach. it is about 25 cm long. In alcoholics there is high chance of carcinoma of oesophagus
