Medieval fortress on volcanic rock
Pride and mighty Riegersburg towers as a landmark of the Styria Thermal Region on a 482m high, steep volcanic rock.
The beginnings of Riegersburg go back to the 12th century, in which it is first mentioned in a document. The history of the castle was very moving. Several times changed in the troubled times, the owners. The most famous of them was the Lady Elisabeth Catherine of Galler in the 17th century. Under her rule, the fortress was extended generously.
Today, the Riegersburg belongs to the extensive property of the Liechtensteiners.
