SPS Governance Proposal - Conclave Arcana Starter Packs

in #spsproposal25 days ago

This draft has been approved by all members of the SPS Foundation board unanimously.

The purpose of this proposal is to determine if the SPS DAO would like to adjust the way that the Conclave Arcana starter packs are going to be sold. After several requests to adjust the approved starter packs from 5,000 DEC for 25 cards to 1,000 DEC for 5 cards, this poll was used to determine if a majority of participating stake would like this proposal to be created and put before the SPS DAO.

Please note that this proposal is only for adjusting the new "starter packs" that will feature exclusively common and rare cards with no chance for the cards to be Gold Foil.

If this proposal passes, the SPS DAO would like to amend the terms set forth in this previously passed proposal from the Splinterlands team as follows:

  • Starter packs will be sold for 1,000 DEC
  • Starter packs will contain only 5 cards
  • Starter packs will have 1 guaranteed Rare card
  • Spellbooks should come with 5 of these starter packs purchased by the company with half of the revenue going to the DAO to keep the terms proportionate to the previously approved proposal

I think cheaper is better

Remember most Web2 games thrive on Microtransactions...

That's only $.10... That's only $.75...

This is what appeals to the masses... this is what most people can afford...

I like this idea for sure!

Edit: You might also consider throwing in a "Jackpot" chance for Epics and Legendaries...

If you have a 2% Chance in a normal pack to be a Legendary... and that pack is 4,000 DEC...

Having a .2% Chance in a 1,000 DEC pack isn't going to hurt the values of Legendary Cards... but... the power of that "Lottery Draw" is HUGE.

There is a chance that players will opt for other Packs because of this "Jackpot" chance. $4 is too large of a price (especially for those who are coming from the high GDP per capita countries). I'm not against having a tiny chance of getting a Legendary or Epic with 1,000 DEC Packs. I don't think we will miss out on a lot by not including these either.

Some Jackpot chance is nice, but I think it's better to have that as a standalone for the other packs, as money has to be made as well.

Have them at the Jackpot-percantages of the reward chests could be okay, so it's one in 100.000 packs or something like that. Also, if you put in legendary, what about epics? The whole idea of these packs was to have them rare and common only, and I think it would be good to stick with that.

Though the micro-transaction-argument is interesting, it's also one of the things that have been critized most about games, since they're manipulative and stand for company greed. But that's a different discussion :-D

I'd suggest running a poll or getting with Jimmy and coming up with one together. We need to see that there's strong stake supporting a change like that from the DAO to run a proposal for it.

How about keeping them common and rare but throwing in a small chance of a gold foil, say a tenth of the percentage for a normal pack? Would at least add a hope for something a little exciting.

In general, it seems people are conflicted or a hard no on this. If there is more demand I'll put together a stake-weighted poll and we can see how it goes. Apparently someone is already planning to run a proposal to lower the price of the 4,000 DEC regular packs, might want to keep that in mind too.

Unpopular opinion... and I know it's not what this proposal is about, but I don't think we should make starter packs at all. I think they'll be a waste of money for anyone who buys them. You can buy a "real" pack now and still end up with far less than $1 worth of cards.

With only commons and rares, with no chance of gold foil, these packs will often produce like $.10 worth of cards. That will frustrate people. It would be much cheaper to buy the cards on the market.

The only advantage I can see, I suppose, is if someone has no idea what cards they want. But again, I can't see anyone spending even $1 on 5 regular foil common and rare cards and coming out thinking it was a good decision.

That said, I'll vote for selling 5 for $1 over 25 for $5.

Sorry, I'm not trying to be a naysayer!

It's definitely not what I personally had in mind for "starter packs" but it is what it is. I do tend to think the more granular option is better as well.

Yeah you will end up spending 1$ to get 0,10-0,20$ worth of cards as the overprint of common and rares will be huge, not worth it without a jackpot

Yeah, the more of these packs that sell, the lower the value of common and rare cards will be. It will only make the problem worse.

good proposal, I think cheap packs is helpful to encourage new players

Barrier to entry should be low to encourage new players to have some card ownership in the game, learn the game some more and then go for higher level packs which would contain a chance for Epics, Legendaries and Gold Foil. 1,000 DEC pack as per this proposal is perfect. Voting Yes.

Yes we need cheap packs to keep people engaged in opening.

What I do not like is these black and white discussions we have with no in-between. We also lock in TOO many points, ie SO many people want to toss in even just a VERY small jackpot chance here, but we ware stonewalling that idea right out of the gates. I guess we COULD make another proposal for that later if necessary, and having $1 starter packs is a good step in the right direction. We are also having deeper discussions about other pack pricing strategies that have not yet been presented that may very well appease both sides of the ongoing pack debate.

I'm aware you guys are discussing a potential proposal related to the main pack pricing. That's fine, I have been asked to address this particular issue. If you think there is support to add more to these packs, make a poll with all the options you prefer and if there is a clear indication that stake wants it, we can run a proposal for it. I can't make unilateral decisions for the DAO so I need something to work off of that is actionable.

Is there a chance of more rare cards than just one? The way this is written, it makes it look like there is only one rare card guaranteed period.
I would like to assume there is chance of more than one rare but...

This is an amendment proposal and will only change the previous one as specified. The original terms for chance of a card being rare or common remain unchanged by this. In short: guaranteed to get at least one.

Since ♠️Common♠️ and 🔷Rare🔷 cards are what you usually see when opening packs, this will be better for new players and should encourage pack gifting.🎴

Excellent Promotion for new Spellbook owners and I looked forward to the one dollar packs, although I hope that their might be a cap of how many are to be sold.

The only question I have about this is the probability of getting duplicate cards. Generally speaking, I'd prefer to get 25 different cards than have the chance of some duplicates by buying 5 packs of 5 cards. I don't know if the original intent was for the 25-card packs to all be different cards or not, but in that regard, 25-card packs would be more appealing to me if I"m trying to build out a deck. With that said, it probably won't be hard to get singles on the open market to fill in any gaps, so it's likely not a big deal.

I feel like this proposal misses the point of a "starter pack". I think the "starter pack" concept was intended to help jumpstart a new player's journey with one, simple click (similar to "starter decks" in other card games).

If the intention is to provide low-cost micro-transaction options to a new player, then that's already provided via the peer-to-peer marketplace where they can buy these cards individually.

Now, if the proposal was to give new players an option to choose a specific Element when making the starter pack purchase...now that's something worth considering. 25 cards all of the same Element for just a few bucks? That sounds like an opportunity to maybe even combine 1-2 cards for their first few ranked battles. THAT would be more in line with the intended purpose of these packs.

I've been saying that these packs will be a waste of money because they'll never come close to being worth $1, but I apparently don't pay enough attention to the price of Rebellion common and rare singles. There are plenty of them worth $.25 or more. I have Chaos Legion pricing lodged in my old man brain. If Concubine Armadillo has common summoners, a "jackpot" one of these packs could be one with several summoners.

5 cards for $1 still seems like the better approach. If someone wants to spend $5, they can still easily do that. But if someone just wants to try their luck with a single $1 pack, why stop them? Every little bit helps.

What if 1000 DEC < 1$? Can we buy Packs with $ instead?

If you mean credits, yes credits will be accepted for packs.

Thanks!
