RE: Steem Velocity Hardfork - Hardfork 20

Looks to me like it’ll allow dApps to do a lot of signups on their own as they can potentially use their stakes to immediately fund new accounts with the discount tokens. Likewise there could be some easy tools to allow users to send friends invites that include instant account creation off their own RCs. Signup vetting can also be more limited as new accounts aren’t starting with any SP. My only concern would be around mass signups for “name squatting” if the process gets too lax.

Sort:

I guess that's what I got out of the summary on signups, too. The question, as you say, will it prevent the mass signups? I'd heard that it would. It didn't seem to be mentioned here that I saw the first time through, but there was plenty to read. :)

Well, it disincentivises the fraudulent signups wherein someone will gather 100 or 1000 bot accounts and have 1,500 to 15,000 SP delegated to their use on Steemit’s dime! Now, you can make 1,000 accounts and all you’ll have is 1,000 names and 0 SP. Hopefully the RC system is stringent enough these 0 value accounts wouldn’t be able to spam more than a handful of times a day as well.
So the only real attack vector is for the value of the account names alone.

I see. So, essentially people can set up these accounts and then auction/sell them off like domain names and not have to worry about there being any STEEM in the accounts whatsoever? Is that what your'e saying?

Essentially. After this fork, new accounts will start with 0 SP. So the main exploit loophole of creating accounts for free SP is closed. The only worry is name “squatting” just like is done with domains, but I imagine that could never be truly stopped, so we’ll start seeing plenty of variations and appended numbers!
