If we will get free SMTs this will be very nice, but I'm still not sure I understand how they will distribute them equally and prevent the steem whales in getting the majority of them.

I am not sure that has been determined or if it will be.
The article I linked was just a suggestion...there is nothing that says it will be embraced.
At this point, many of the particulars are being speculated upon....we honestly have no idea what the breakdown will look like.
Anyways, to keep it simple: I hope you're right and we get free stuff :)
