To be clear, the STEEM itself is not breached. However, I would of thought that the people that use STEEM are pretty savy with computers and security. SHUCKS! The individuals have some how compromised the accounts, thereby allowing some hacker(s) to take advantage and steal 85k USD worth of STEEM. This sucks for the individuals and we do not know what extent of trouble those people hacked. If the credentials that were stolen include some of the passwords for other sites: banks, social media, emails, etc that could be a huge problem. In the positive outlook, the people that have been breached will receive the money they lost from the STEEMPOWERPEEPs. [Not sure exactly who is giving them money]
Sadly, a lot of people who don't understand this community or cryptocurrency will use this hack story as a way to justify that cryptocurrency is prone to attacks such as these and thereby being vulnerable. Just wait till mainstream media picks up on Steem, then will surely bash on it. I think maybe because they make money off the other HUGE social media sites... twitter, fb, insta.. But I say NAY. I say we stand behind this community.
This will surely influence the price of STEEM at some point. We had a steady increase of 12% over the past 24 hours. I don't care if STEEM goes below $3 dollars at this point. How do you think this story will impact the overall STEEM market? Just like the DAO getting attacked, affected ETHER... But thank GOD the STEEM TEAM is so quick that they quickly began investigating the issue and only 85k was lost rather than $50 mil like the DAO.
Here's what I want: someone to give us some detailed and step by step guide on how to be more anonymous on the internet, as well as have some safety measures to keep us from being hacked. I know there is a few ways, such as using VPN and then having a two step verification to log in on accounts. Can I get someone that knows the stuff to link us to some guide for the rest of us, who may be worried that we are open to attacks by such hackers.
In any case, I just want to tell you all I am here to stay for the long run. #+STEEM
