Meme Dump #1
When this blogchain thing started, we may have been a little optimistic:
Text
Mark Zuckerberg: Facebook is dead! I'm making an account on SteemitOn the other hand, others already declared Steem dead three years before it turned into a zombie:

Altcoin Obituary: Steem was a revolutionary new way to write articles on the internet and lose money at the same time.Traders kept trading anyway, and speculators kept speculating:

What sets the price of Steem? Kati's feet.Welcome to the Memedump Project!
This is where I (@edb) will post selected memes from my extensive collection once a day. I've been talking about 'low effort, high value' content for years, and Hive Day seemed a good occasion to finally get started. The general idea is that a Python script will suggest a handful of random images (once I finish rewriting it), after which I'll choose 5 to 10 related memes for a theme that seems interesting.
However, today is a special day, so let's get started by looking back to the centralized blockchain we escaped from four years ago. I actually made half of these myself, including a couple of new ones, because the existing Steem memes I'd saved sucked. Feel free to post images in the comments if you think you have better memes.
Since it's mostly my own work, this post will accept rewards, but for regular meme dumps, rewards will be declined. I don't want to get into a debate about profiting from other people's work, although I think I do contribute a lot by curating, transcribing and hosting images. I just want to make Hive more fun and challenging to read, while promoting my own account.
I'll write a proper introduction post later, after you've been able to check out some examples first. OK, scroll on!
Do you remember when trash whales dominated the trending page?

When spammers were trending on Steem. Trash whale artwork: Skyscraper by STUDIOKCA.Spam fighters were not perfect either and sometimes made mistakes:

that feel when a whale downvotes your post (screenshot from the Freechain movie)Then we swiped left when Justin Sun matched with Steemit:

Oh the fun times of 2020. New people won't know about Ned, Justin, Bernie, Haejin and others from that time. Hive is a different place now. It still has some issues, but it's generally good.
The value of things like memes is a matter of opinion, but that's why we get to vote on stuff.
Yeah, I watched the Freechain movie and I wished they'd focused more on wild stories from before the fork rather than explaining Bitcoin. The ridiculous rewards at the start, the motivational scammer who was downvoted to oblivion, the marketing guy who exploited vote-buying but did write funny posts, Quinn crying on stage in Lisbon, Steemit handing out T-shirts for Smart Media Tokens but never releasing them, and so on. It was bonkers. And all this while we have pretty normal people here, compared to Crypto Twitter.
That could be a fun alternative film. I need to see Freechain some time.

This one was below my standards for visual quality, which are already as low on the ground as a mole:
