The church in Ephesus was mostly made up of non-Jews, although there was a small colony of Jews there. The non-Jews were also identified as the "incircucisión". This label had been placed on them by the so-called "circumcision", that is, by the Jews.

God made a true distinction between the Jew and the non-Jew, beginning with Abraham and moving forward until the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost. Israel occupied a unique position among the nations. A non-Jew could be added to that people only as a proselyte. Over time, this distinction caused friction because Israel took pride in its position. The Israelites came to despise non-Jews, and hatred began to appear in the hearts of both groups.

In these verses there is a description of the sad fate and desperate situation of non-Jews. They are also an exact image of any lost human being. This is what it means to be lost:

1.Without Christ: This is the best definition of a lost person. It is the opposite of being in Christ, united to Christ.

2.Separated from the citizenship of Israel: Or separated from the citizenship of Israel. This was the exact definition of a non-Jew. The non-Jew did not have a religion given by God, as the Jew had. He had no right to look back to the Old Testament and to take the promises that God had made to Israel and appropriate them. We do not have that right either. God did not make those promises to us.

3.Oblivious to the covenants of promise: God had made certain promises to the nation of Israel. The covenants he made with Israel are still valid, but no non-Jew had the right to appropriate them. God had promised the Israelites a land. Someday they will get it, but under God's conditions, not theirs. The promise that He has given us is found in John 14: 2-3, and it is this: "I am going to prepare a place for you, 3and if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you myself, so that where I am, you too may be. "

4.Hopeless: Observe the religions of the world, they have no sure hope. They can not promise resurrection and they are vague or confused about what happens after death. Cults or sects offer no hope. They erect an obstacle that no human being could overcome. The lack of hope was the tragic condition of non-Jews. For the lost human being, the present life is extremely important and if he loses well-being and diversions here, he is doubly desperate. In the pagan world death could only bring desolation and it was a real tragedy.

5.Without God in the world: This did not mean that God had departed from the human being, but rather it was man who had turned away from God. Man is left without God by his own decision. He is in the dark, wandering with the rest of lost humanity. Frankly, if I were in the position of a lost person today, I would sink into despair and not know what I would do to forget everything, because I would not have any hope left. What else could a person do in such a situation? The only thing I would have left to do would be to squeeze this life to the fullest as a fruit, to get all the juice I could. There would be no hope or expectation for after death. That is what it would imply to be without hope and without God.
