As for your initial question, I think what Stemit needs is be more stylish. I am definately sure this website will boom in both the cryptocurrency market and the social media market. If things are done properly, it will overcome facebook, instagram or twitter. But in order for that it needs to be better looking so it reaches masses, which in the end is what controls the world.
