I like this post a lot, as it covers some of my general worries about freelancing, and Steemit as well.
My personal opinion is that it is not any wise to put all your efforts on Steemit, but also not in any other freelance business. Even a company job includes some insecurity, and jobs/business online way much more. I think who really loves engaging here (and I am one of them), it is wise to maybe do half Steemit, half something else, having at least two sources of income.
I also think Steemit is a great place to promote your ideas and talents, and to spread some knowledge and wisdom, and of course it is great that you can earn money from it. But I guess when you start worrying if you will be able to pay bills from those ideas, talents, knowledge, and wisdom, you might lose that genuine inspiration.
