You may not know this, but you have four different passwords or "keys" associated with your Steemit account. In this video, you will learn how to find all of your Steemit passwords, what they are all for, which ones to use when, and how to protect them.
Table of passwords and their functions
Action | Posting Key | Active Key | Owner/ Master Key | Memo Key |
---|---|---|---|---|
post, comment, follow, upvote, downvote | X | X | X | |
Transfer, trade, power up/down, change keys, witness voting | X | X | ||
Change owner key | X | |||
View private messages | X |
Here's another way to look at the same info:
Key | Action |
---|---|
Posting Key | post, comment, follow, upvote, downvote |
Active Key | post, comment, follow, vote, transfer funds, trade, power up/down, change other keys, vote for witnesses |
Owner/Master Key | post, comment, follow, transfer funds, trade, power up/down, change other keys, vote for witnesses, change owner key |
Memo Key | view private messages |
***EDIT: @sorin.cristescu points out in comments below what the memo key is used for and how to use it. Here's the post explaining the memo password in more detail, written by @steemmillionaire.

Dear @littlescribe, by chance I've just learned today what the MEMO key is for (and it's pretty cool, too) ! It's explained in this post from @steemmillionaire.
To exemplify here, I've just used the functionality to send you an encrypted message. I see it clearly in MY wallet and YOU should also be able to read it, but someone "snooping" on the blockchain would see this:
Can you please confirm that you are indeed able to read the memo I've sent by replying to this comment with its clear text ? :-)
OK. Got it! I actually own a chromebook, so I record using screencastify which is a web-based screen recording/editing tool made specifically for chromebooks. It's not top notch, as it is cloud-based, and honestly only like $24 per year. But it fits my chromebook, which I prefer right now as it's hack-resistent. I either upload to my google drive, or I just download to my chromebook (which holds it on the g drive anyway) and then upload to youtube and d-tube. Then I delete from my gdrive, as I'm not paying for extra space right now.
As far as my regular videos, I just record from my android phone and edit from my mac using imovie.
This 007 thing is superfly. The only complaint I have is you have to log in to your account with the master key, and I do NOT like doing that. Even on a chromebook. I just have had too many weird things happen in the past. Ya know? Is there a workaround?
Transfers are done with the Active key I believe so you should be able to use your Active key instead of the master password.
I learned about this comment by reading an encrypted memo published on the public blockchain, and upvoted it in order to promote this Steemit feature. Get more details here: Special Promotion for Usage of Encrypted Steemit Messages
BTW, when looking at the blockchain I've noticed your VP is left unused, which is a pity.
Think that the rewards pool is for everyone and if YOU don't use your VP that leaves more $$$ for haejin and other scammers.
You should try to always use your VP to reward authors that you appreciate and never let it unused at 100%.
And because you can't stay on Steemit all day, there are tools such as steemauto or steemian where you can use your Posting key to instruct these sites to automatically upvote your favorite authors as soon as your VP goes above a threshold (for instance 95%)
More details about this and other such topics in this post
I was thinking, maybe you could do a thing where you go through and tag people for not voting their power, and explain why it's important by linking it to a really watered down version of the "Best Way to Grow" post. Most people won't have the stamina to read or understand a lot of what you've put there. But the concept is pretty straightforward. Vote, or else someone else will have access to that untapped voting power.
Vote after 30 minutes, or it won't count toward you.
Don't vote for yourself until you've given other people a chance to vote for you first, so they can reap from the curation pool.
Neat idea, thank you. I'll try to do something like that.
I just VP'd you 100% on another comment. Thanks for the reminder!!!
thank you :)
I'll go check...oooh, this is so 007.
Use "Transfer" - You note that I've transfered 0.001 SBD to you. So you start a transfer of a sum, any sum but the minimum is 0.001 (probably this is to avoid someone abusing using the system to send spam messages). And when you transfer you can add a "memo". The memo will be in clear unless you prefix it with a #
You can answer my question via encrypted message too, if you want to try. Or do I need to transfer more SBD to earn an answer ? :-D
I was too cheap, right ? I should up the ante ? :-D
I dont't understand this. If Steemit is on blockchain that means when something is in a block, approved, how come you can edit your post titles? and content? or is this 7 day period just that? for something to be approved
Nope, what you see in steemit is being "filtered" through a User Interface (called "condenser", for obscure reasons). On the blockchain you have EVERYTHING. You have your original post and then you have a subsequent "transaction" with the modifications you've done. When the "condenser" prepares the web page to display it to you, it combines all the transactions that refer to a post and "merges" them to show you the latest version of a post.
So what you see in a web page is a merged version of the original post and all the subsequent modifications. Blockchain is not changed, it's "appended to"
Here is a picture of a comment I've written several minutes ago:
And then I did some stuff and came back and EDITED that same comment. This edit is another transaction on the blockchain which looks like this:
But when you read the comment on Steemit you only see the MERGED version from the two transactions, which corresponds to the FINAL version.
The rule of 7 days is probably to protect the blockchain from too many "edit" operations maybe (in relationship with old content) ? And to keep coherent with the rewards cycle of 7 days ? Just speculating here, I'm not sure
This was fabulous. Thanks! I wondered about that too. And the 7 day cycle I'm sure has to do with both things. The payout and the reduction of changes. But I guess it's interesting to know that all of the original comments and posts I make are floating around on the blockchain too......insert twighlight zone theme here.
mulțumesc
cu placere ;-)
I know, I actually have the same question. I don't know how it works. Probably there is some time travel-alternate universe loop involved. :0)
Security is a big concern thank for the tutorial
Always good to have this information shared.
I like the SteemIt BOOM.
Thanks! I need to get a more clever logo pretty soon. But for now, it works. Maybe I'll hold a contest or something and pay out some SBD for a good logo....I'd do something myself, but I had to wipe my computer and can't find my photoshop! Aaaaah!
Very helpful! Thank you very much!
Even will all this passwords and scammers are managing to steal accounts. Security is a must in such a platform and I am glad that we have all these passwords. Good work, keep it up :)
I know. It's true. It sucks. It's because money is involved. Plain and simple. The only way I'm aware of the hackers get in is by phishing and by key logging when you open other sites that ask for your password. I'm sure there are lots of ways, but I just never use it anywhere.
I've always been wondering also why there are so many of these my never look into it as I've never need to use any of them to do anything.. just yet. Thanks for sharing. This is helpful ! :)
Thanks for doing this tutorial, a much needed addition to the steem platform knowledge. Good job!
Yeah! Lots of password. I think it is good for security but can be confusing for beginners. They'll get use to it eventually.
Congrats on the big upvote! Well deserved.
Aw shucks. Thanks sexymatty. I think I got noticed by dtube. You're doing awesome yourself. Way further along than I was at your "steem age".
Hey, you gunna do another thrifter post? Those are cool! Once you do one, drop me the link. I wanna see it.
Thanks for the thrifting endorsement. I can't seem to get much traction with any posts except my punchline stuff, so I'd shied away from them or the time being. I'll drop one in soon.
It seems like dtube is a much wiser way to approach Steemit right now, since they upvote well to motivate and reward, but I've never made a video of myself except the drumming, and that's hard enough for me to do in the public eye.
If some developer builds a third party twitter, or facebook app. You also have to deal with multiple layers of credentials. it just normaly doesn't gets shown to the user.
I did not know that...although, this is not a third party app. It's just steemit in and of itself. So I dunno. I think we should just have 2 factor. But what do I know?
Dtube, Dmania, Busy.org
thanx for that @littlescribe. i really needed that!
You are welcome!
Very complex subject ; thank you for claryfing it.
It must be the red lip stick, necklace and dress! I'm going to start doing the same thing. Lipstick might be a problem but for $95 who cares! I think you have the tiger by the tail @littlescribe. Is that a dolphin I hear swimming toward you?
splishy splashy.
Thx @littlescribe for that informative post. Upvoted :)
Finally I had a chance to resteem your post.... but it seem that it's not possible any more?
Is it because it's older than 7 days?
