Inspiring many thoughts! I've thought through the points you make, and in general they apply to me. I put in hours of effort for most (not all) posts, but I know I'm probably not going to be rewarded with upvotes, STEEM, SBD, or SP...my goal is to find that one reader who may be inspired or gain insight from my posts. I am a retired research scientist, and I have years of experience and unfinished research that needs to be accessible to younger, fledgling scientists who can actually use my input to advance their own careers and the trajectory of scientific information dissemination in the future. The existing standard peer review system for publishing scientific discoveries has many flaws. Steemit offers the platform I need to publish and disseminate my unpublished scientific data.

And our stuff stays online forever and can be useful now or maybe in ten years from now and we are building databases and empires that we build on and we grow each day that way and more people begin to follow us as time goes by.
Can people upvote or resteem a post months or years in the future? Does the support still gain Steem?
No, in 2017, on http://Steemit.com, I was not able to resteem (SHARE) posts, comments, articles, things that we write on http://Steemit.com, anything that was seven days or older. The RESTEEM button disappears after 7 days but you can still copy and paste the links to other websites or share them manually on Steemit as well.
Upvotes (LIKES) are paid out after 7 days. So, after that, even if you can click on the UPVOTE button, you will not get any money out of that as far as I know or that was at least the case as of 2017 and still is now in 2018 as far as I know.
Thanks for your input, but it sux if I can't claim rewards later. I've been active on Steemit to establish an identity and make friends, but I've been practicing my posting and HTML skills with some newbie posts. I have some valuable unpublished scientific discoveries to share and I'm glad my posts will live in perpetuity.
Agreed, it can be tough to gain rewards before deadlines. Love science.

How do you feel about those paid resteem accounts? Would I benefit by following one of those upvoters or resteemer services? I could afford a few SBD or Steem if it will help in the long run. Is that considered good practice for a newbie, or is it like cheating?
You could try but it is risky and may not work. If you have more money than time, then maybe you could try some of that. I have more time than money. I do not know what is cheating and what is not cheating. All of this is part of capitalism and not socialism. But socialists would tell you it is cheating and capitalists would say it is not cheating to pay for view pay for upvotes.
