I got asked this question on twitter. I like it because it is not just hype, it is actually delivering on it's promise. It is a social platform that decentralizes content visibility. By doing so it rewards everyone involved.
Even if you only make 5 cents a post/comment/upvote, that is 5 more cents than you would make anywhere else. Getting the smallest of rewards shows the potential that bigger rewards are possible. If you are active on reddit, twitter, facebook, bitcointalk, bodybuilding.com, etc. you spend time discussing your interests because you enjoy it and the content you provide for free benefits the reader, but all the substantial financial benefits (billions) go to the owners. "Steem is the first cryptocurrency that attempts to accurately and transparently reward an unbound number of individuals who make subjective contributions to its community." People who reward their time by curating good content via upvotes share in the rewards as if they were an investor in the platform. The more you contribute the more influence you have. Also, the money does not come out of your pocket, the system rewards the content creator. It does not come from micropayments out of your account. Limits are put in place to prevent people from upvoting every article.
So obviously it is an inflationary coin, but it is using inflation to tackle a major problem, which is growth. Why wouldn't you want to start a new online community here, or move a current one over here? Frankly I don't like forums. There is too much bad worthless content to find something of value. At Steem, trolls don't have a voice. Accounts are given reputation scores and if the person never contributes anything positive and is only a troll, their comments will not even be visible. Whereas positive healthy debates are welcome and highly rewarded.
It is still just an experiment. But I can see the potential. As Steem grows you will get the best content and the best rewards for what you put into the platform. The more you play around with it, the more you will feel inspired to create great content which is a feeling that I do not get anywhere else.
