We've seen steem surge before, so I'm not getting too excited. It's part of a general rise, but it's gone up more than most. Maybe the recent media coverage is helping. We need to see some updates to the platform before it can really take off. Hardfork 20 still looks to be a way off.

If there was a burst of buying ahead of an announcement, doesn't that indicate insider trading?

True - stupidity or negligence is always a more likely explanation than deliberate wrongdoing.
