So an alarming payout issue occurred, but I am going to remain true to my word (re: Forget About The Money).
Like I said, the money in that incident is not my focus. I still love this place and it doesn't tarnish my belief that this place can be a thriving community of intelligent, creative, and incredibly positive group of people who can all benefit from everyone's participation within it.
However, system issues which may cause that big of a drop in payout (over $1,100 drop at the very second of payout, leaving $143) IS my focus. If this is a bug, I don't want it to happen to anyone else.
See this thread for details.
I'll keep everyone updated on the outcome if you're interested.
Also feel free to comment with any similar issues you might have.
I recommend that if you have a post which is currently garnering a large sum, take a picture of that thread in the event your payout changes inexplicably. If this is a bug, we need to have evidence to back up our claims.

reward weight?

I think you're on to something. Do post EDITS go towards that allowance of 4 posts?
If so, that's GOT to be what it is.
I do not believe this is a bug or an issue with the blockchain or the payout system. It's simply your Reward Weight. Unless I'm not understanding what I'm reading. I really hope this is the answer and it has resolved your current situation.
Thank you for helping me with this. I was beginning to have doubts.
Looks like I'll just have to adjust how I play the game so this kind of thing doesn't happen again.
I think it has cleared some confusion for me, because I edited my post a handful of times throughout the day today. I blame my so-called "perfectionism" (which in and of itself isn't so perfect).
If it counts blog post edits towards your 4 allotted posts you can have before they begin penalizing you for it, then I TOTALLY did this to myself.
By resolving one question, (potentially) we have discovered another! I do not know the answer to your Post Edit question. I would like to think it is a no, because I can edit my posts for a while, if that penalized us, I'd think it would of been brought to our attention sooner. I've never tracked how long, or thought even at which point does that option go away?
Maybe once a payout has occurred on the blockchain Story Edits are no longer possible because it's been verified on the chain? I edit posts, as well, I'm sort of a grammar fiend. It's never affected a payout to me that I've noticed. Curation Award or other wise.
What I think has done this to you is the amount of posts you've made through the Submit a Story option. as explained by @rogue91
Again, I could be completely misunderstanding this whole Reward Weight system too. I'm just now learning it, literally. I discovered it researching your problem trying to help resolve it.
I have to say I think I'm inclined to believe edits count, because when you edit and you check out how it looks on your steemd.com profile, it said you've "authored" a post, not "edited" one.
I didn't make that many other posts in the past day that I would believe would cause an 85% drop in payout, but I edited WAY more than 4 times.
As a matter of fact, I'm almost positive editing is what did it because every time you edit a post, it bumps it to the top of the Active pages, thereby making it more visible and thus susceptible to spamming unless a limit is put on it.
you made a like 10 photography posts that day... thats rough man... but the money doesnt matter, right? the info posted says youre reduced by about 87% at 10 posts....
It looks like you have 14 posts now listed as 2 days ago, including the one youre talking about....
You're absolutely right. The post I created in which I caused alarm among the community has garnered over $2,000. So to make it up to everyone for alarming the community, every transferrable dollar I end up with is going to be split among the people I scared and who posted before it was revealed to be my own mistake. I want to make this right.
Interesting, as I watch a post drop a few cents. I wish that the way posts are monetized was explained more clearly. I still don't even know how a post can have 1 vote for hundreds of dollars, yet this post has 47 votes for a penny.
Pretty much anything being posted in the #steemit section is getting automatically upvoted by bots who have nearly zero Steem Power. Therefore, dozens of bot votes = very little earned.
How the rewards work is explained in several places. Have a look here.

You can also reference the Steem White Paper directly off the main site.

EDIT: As for why a post can have a bazillion votes and zero payout, and what the consequences are, you can read my article here.

It's about Upvoting correctly. Use Steemd.com/@yourusername and track your stats, live. Experiment with Upvoting different posts of value. Go back to steemd each time, immediately and refresh to see the data. Again everyone's payout power is valued by how much Steem Power and Voting Power you own at the time of the Upvote too.. So there's a lot that plays into this. You'll see some of your votes drop someone's current payout down or rise, immediately. Some of your votes will not adjust the payout at all..
"I have to say I think I'm inclined to believe edits count, because when you edit and you check out how it looks on your steemd.com profile, it said you've "authored" a post, not "edited" one"
This is true. Well then. I think we figured some shit out tonight @winstonwolfe
highfive!
Word! :D
"As a matter of fact, I'm almost positive editing is what did it because every time you edit a post, it bumps it to the top of the Active pages, thereby making it more visible and thus susceptible to spamming unless a limit is put on it."
Yea, I do believe so, my friend. This is a good catch at an awesome stage in your Steemit adventure as well as mine and others. It could of cost a lot more..
Less Edits!! Take our time. Proofread blah blah haha
And for your services with helping me narrow this all down and resolve it...I will give you a penny. :)
