I'm unsure about others but I'm much nicer online than in actual person. Something about intimacy in the real world puts me off. Distance allows me time to ponder and reflect before expressing my opinion. It is not about encouraging superficiality but rather a practice to express oneself more effectively. By far, the whales I choose to follow on Steemit put a lot of thoughts in their posts so I don't feel the need to disagree with them. In real life however, I can't always choose the whales I interact with personally due to various life situations so I am well known as the crazy bitch. Being someone with too much backbone comes with many unwanted consequences I can assure you. Nothing wrong with that. Just a realization that online job suits me far better than conventional ones.
