Panulaan ng Diwa # 5 - Piko (Larong Pilipino)

Inspiration/Inspirasyon

I feel lucky to have been born in the early 80's. Growing up in the late 80's until the mid-90's in the Philippines, not a lot of homes had access to computer games, much less internet connection. Our games to pass the time as kids were mostly done outside and are quite physical too. I hardly see the games of our age being played, if anything they are being studied in Physical Education classes. I don't know about you but games are much more fun being played than being read about. This series of poetry written in our vernacular is aimed at immortalizing my fond memories playing the many Filipino games of our age.

Piko - Larong Pilipino

It's so nostalgic to remember the 80's when we are playing the traditional games like the harangang-taga which in my opinion is the most exciting Filipino next to "tag" or what we call here Moro-moro, played with two teams with equal members with both teams with a Home. We also played an invented game we called huyo as my cousin called it, a mix of a golf and piko.

Agree Arnold. It's more fun playing those physical games that requires actual human interaction unlike the online and computer games of today. We too liked altering the game rules every now and again when we were children. Huyo sounds fun. :-)

When I was a child, I like to play outside, too. I think, this can help us be in healthy body. I absolutely agree with you, “games are much more fun being played than being read about”.

The game in the photo and in the video are quite similar to the games we had here. I especially like to play the game in the video. I had a lot of fun with my friends!

Thanks so much for sharing. These can remind me to good memories in playing games during my childhood, too. ;)

Glad you liked it @tangmo. I think our countries really have lots in common.

Ah! I do really think so. And that’s really great! ;)

It really feels good reminiscing old days!
