Drawing the Iron Golem Bust

Good Day Guys! Art here!

I've decided to draw the Iron Golem today, but not all of it yet. What I've drawn is its Bust only. First of all, what is an Iron Golem? Read this:

This is a fictional vehicle from the world of Leviathan. There reference image I used is from the usual book Manual of Aeronautics that is essentially the art book for the Leviathan Series. I really wish they have a much bigger art book that this though. Althoug I know those big ones may cost me up to $100. A pretty hefty amount, if you ask me.

Here's how I drew the Iron Golem Bust:

I only used 4 things here:

  • A Sketch Book
  • A pencil
  • A pen
  • Photoshop for enhancements

First off, I used a pencil to sketch the Golem's Bust - detaching its head and shoulders from the body. I made sure to add details where it was broken off.

Afterwards, I inked in some parts of it as you can see on the drawing on the right panel of the next photo. Just a rough ink sketch.

After a while, I was able to draw ink on the whole sketch. I've included a close-up shot of it here as well (after I added a few shading using cross-hatch technique):

I added in more shadows on the neck and shoulder parts here, before finishing all the details on the head and face:

Hold your horses, I didn't finish the bust here. I was able to digitize it as well using Photoshop. Just a few fixes and color touch-ups were added to the original drawing:

For the above drawing, I simply used the Cut Out option under Filter Gallery. I didn't simplify the shapes too much because it will lose the vital details and it would look 'funny'.

I added a darker color for the background and also touched-up some of the outlines of the drawing using the Brush Tool.

I added a layer of color Green onto some parts and used the 'Multiply' effect to achieve the look, I did this to avoid filling in the blank spaces manually. Instead I took advantage of the effect to color things in much much easier.

I did the same thing on this next image, but with a different color - a dark yellow gold tone. Same 'Multiply' effect was used to achieve this.

I painted over the image on another layer using 2 colors: green and yellow. Then used the Smudge Tool to mix up the borders a bit. Afterwards, I'll be using the 'Saturation' effect on this layer to achieve the look on the next image:

Here's our final image. It looks like a damaged camouflage Golem that was defeated in battle. The Saturation effect did great on adding those colors into the drawing. I also added some haze around it to emphasize the image using a brush and a bit of change on the layer's opacity.

I sincerely hope you like today's creation. Stay tuned for more drawings by me! Cheers!
