YES cyberwar is all around us and It even happened before.
The Stuxnet Attack
Probably one of the most famous computer warfare incidents would be Stuxnet and it's made a lot of headlines. It was a computer worm which became famous around 2010. It primarily spreads through USB sticks or USB keys so it's not necessarily on the Internet although it could be spread that way so you plug in this USB stick to a computer not connected to the internet and it would spread locally across that close to network. The worm only does one thing. It looks for a particular model of a programmable logic controller ,a PLC, basically a control chip for huge machinery industrial machinery the PLC it's looking for is usually responsible for controlling machinery in specific places like factories power plants centrifuges. It's most famous for attacking a nuclear power plant in Iran and it's believed that it was designed and released for a while mysteriously but Edward Snowden says it was the United States and Israel they think although there are also clues that the U.S. did it which is really interesting because this would be one of the first concrete examples of a government attacking another government through a computer virus.
The Equifax Hack
In recent news Equifax which is one of the big three credit reporting agencies the companies who keep financial data on all of us so that people like lenders and landlords can decide whether or not we are trustworthy so Equifax controls some of our most sensitive information and guess what they got hacked. The breach affected nearly a hundred and forty five million Americans. The data stolen was highly sensitive as it contains your name social security number birth date driver's license and addresses where you lived which is enough information that anyone can steal your identity and go get a loan or even apply for a job.
These attacks were only some of the attacks that take place every day and if you want to see attacks happening then you coukld head to Norse.
