Dancing Sisters
I have three sisters who are dancers although this is not the first piece for me to feature dancers, I have yet to paint one of three sisters. This piece went through many evolutions. Initially there was supposed to be only one dancer, then as I was scrolling through for references I saw two different reference poses that seemed to connect and feed of each other as if they were actually dancing. As I finished my first sketch with the dancing duo it felt a bit off. So I decided to depict three dancers just like my sisters. Painting dancers have a challenge to them you need to exude motion, find the point where the dancer just projects herself in a way that it also seems like she could move unto the next step in her dance. I wanted the dancers to not only be interpreted as three sisters but could also be seen as one dancer gracefully captured as she goes from one position into the other.
Process
Sketching
As I mentioned in the description the initial sketch was only of two dancers, but as I finished the sketch, despite both dancers having a sort if connection in the direction of motion it lacked harmony and symmetry. I wanted something to feed off of the strong line the second dancer has.
Inking
The inking process has two parts, the dancers and the splattering.
It took me around 2 and a half hours to finish the entire painting process for the dancers. After which I coverd up the dancers to add a bit of splatter into the piece.
By controlling the splatter patters to coincide with the motion and lines of the dancers, the splatter won’t seem random but it would give life and motion to the dancers.
Scan and EnhanceIn this age of technology a photo of art will often times not be enough to capture the image the artist’s intentions as most of the time the lighting and other aspects will be in the way. So I scanned and enhanced the original scan to be what I truly want it to be. Hence this entry is a mashup of traditional art with modern methods.
I hope you like this piece. Since I had promised my sister this piece as a birthday gift when she saw me working on it on my instagram story, my final submission will be the scanned and digitally enhanced work.
If you are new to my blog then it is my pleasure to introduce to you the Adventure Initiative. Aside from an artist I am also a travel blogger and I am hosting a travel blog contest with a 10 SBD giveaway. The details are in the link above, final submissions will be on April 15 2018.
