Never pity yourself - Amna Raheel

in #story7 years ago

"I was two years old when my parents realized that I different. I never crawled, I couldn’t hold my head up for too long and I had trouble walking. What I have is known as Muscular Dystrophy and there is no cure for it. They soon learnt I would be wheel chair bound for life even though mum denied it till I became a teenager.

Then one day my parents sat me down and told me I would have to make some tough choices in life- There were certain things I would never be able to do. Karachi is not easily accessible for people in my condition. Life was going to be difficult. That same day I also made a promise to myself; I would not let this disease define me –
I would not let this city be inaccessible for me.

Today, I’m a 25 year old Graduate and nothing can hold me back. Yes, there were plenty of struggles but I made every inaccessibility accessible for myself and now I am on a mission to create awareness, to make people understand how important it is for ramps to be made in every public space so that people like me can hope to live normal and fulfilling lives.”

I am encouraged that you have overcome many challenges even though you could have blamed your condition, you surroundings, and your support network.

You are a true hero!

She is a close friend of mine and believe me i have met no one with such courage :)

I see the quotation marks now, but I did not realize that you were not the writer of the message when I first read it.

@danuahmed, I would have really appreciated if you could have acknowledged that you were not the author of this message, and given credit to your friend. I hope you were not trying to gain from your friends condition. I will give you the benefit of the doubt, but I would advise making changes if you do something similar.

It's not the same girl who wrote this, it's copied from a Facebook post. Admittedly the text is in quotes and there is attribution, but the commenters are clearly thinking this is her post.

Thanks for the information!

Keep up the good spirit girl!!

O my god, thats so sad to hear. I'm really proud of you for not letting your troubles hold you back. I'm also so glad your making it through life, and I really hope the best for you.

this is very touching, i must tell you that you owe everything to yourself,i'm glad you didn't let your situation define you nor hold you back, nice post, this will be a very motivation to other people out there, that they could be them self no matter how hard the situation is.

What a beautiful message of tolerance, how can we evolve if we do not care about people who we have probably made life more difficult because of our inadequate infrastructures. I hope that you will succeed in fighting this kind of injustice :)
