THE GIANT HOK-BRAS

hok-bras_4.jpg
The construction of the Noah's Ark.

Hok-Bras could not shout: enough! enough! to return to his natural size; and besides, if he had shrunk, the vessel would have ruptured his chest.

So there he is, running, running like a man possessed, surveying plains, mountains, and valleys, with eighty cannons in his throat...

Finally, he calmed down a little and said to himself quite naturally:

"My aunt will get me out of this mess."

And he began to run in the direction of the Monts d'Arrée, which he had seen born and which was going to become his tomb... Yes, at that time, as always, ambition destroyed men; by dint of growing, they fall from higher heights and can no longer get up, burdened as they are with the too-heavy weight of their insatiable lust.

Hok-Bras therefore sat down for a moment to rest on Mont Saint-Michel, because his three-decked ship made it difficult for him to make a long journey. Then, when he had rested, instead of going around the marsh, he wanted to cross it to go faster.

Unfortunately, he counted without the weight of his eighty cannons. In fact, he had not taken four strides in the middle of a large marsh that he felt himself sinking, sinking, to the point where he could no longer remove his legs. Then, in his terrible efforts, he stumbled, and his immense body, carried by the weight of the eighty cannons, fell on the mountain.

There was, it is said, an earthquake, and at Huelgoat the fairy was terrified.

Hok-Bras had broken his head when he fell on the rocks he had piled up himself. His godmother, mad with grief, ran to him and tried in vain to bring him back to life; but not being able to succeed, she retired to Saint-Herbot, where today her shadow returns to wander along the banks of the torrents...

Now, it would take too long to report everything that is said about the corpse of Hok-Bras.

It is claimed that seeing the flood coming and not finding beams strong enough to build the Ark, Noah, who had heard of the Breton colossus, came to the Monts d'Arrée, sawed off the beard of the deceased giant, and made the frames of the supreme ship.

Noah also wanted, out of curiosity or to weigh his ark, to take some Hok-Bras teeth; for each one, he needed three vigorous sailors.

Many other things are said about the gigantic builder of our mountains... But here ends this authentic story, a story which undoubtedly showed you that the Bretons are not little boys!

Next Tale: God's Will

Hello, my name is Vincent Celier.

I am writing translations of folk tales that I found in public domain French books, so that people who do not understand French may enjoy them too.

And now we end this very weird tale, that is claimed to be authentic, with the death of the giant Hok-Bras.

It is strange to learn that before Noah constructed the Ark, there existed three-deck ships with 80 canons!

Every year, my colleagues from the École Navale exchanged good wishes for the New Year.

This year, one of them reminded us of an episode that happened in 1970.

The whole promotion went on ships to visit the Britannia Royal Naval College, the British equivalent of the École Navale.

We were invited by the British cadets to their bar. We noticed that there were inscriptions on the ceiling. So, we decided that we wanted to make our own inscription. But the cadets prevented us from doing that.

As it was impossible then, one of us made sure that one of the windows of a room close to the bar could be opened from the outside.

At 4 PM, two of my colleagues came back to the Royal College, climbed through the window, evaded the cleaning crew, and went into the bar. With a stool, on a chair, itself on a table, one of them was able to make a small inscription. As this guy is decided and the other one does not remember, we will probably never know what the inscription was.

When the British cadets came later to visit the École Navale, they tried to make their own inscription on the ceiling of our bar, but of course, we prevented them from doing so.

I liked the story a lot because in it we saw that there was a true love but it made us all sad because when lovers are separated from each other time and things happen. She goes away in a lot of grief, as we have seen that her aunt could not save her and she has left this world, so we see that people who leave this world They never come back and we miss the time spent with them so we get very sad but it is a fact of the world that one day we all have to leave this world. It is better that all of us should treat each other with good behavior and help each other and in the future also we should take care that if any person needs us, we must go to him.

Buildings like this are so beautiful it's a good thing you were invited there.

Ah! To hear that Hok-Bras is dead at last. I wonder how much he would have accomplished with his great height if he had lived much longer. I feel his life would have been saved if his godmother, the fairy acted in time. And also he didn't get to wed the woman he loved. I think the tale ended on a really sad note. It is quite surprising to learn that Hok-Bras existed before the time of the great flood. I just hope his soul rests peacefully in eternity.

Thanks for sharing.

It's good to hear some of the interesting things you did during your navy days. It must have felt pretty good to recall those fun memories you spent with your naval colleagues, and it's good you keep in touch after so many years.

Goodbye and God bless, @vcelier.

Giant Hok-Bras eventually died with the weight of the eighty cannons, so unfortunate. I know he tried to save himself by going over to his Aunty's place but he couldn't make it because of the heavy ship he was carrying, which slowed down his steps.
Look at how he sank in the marsh and broke his head against the mountains, it was a terrible and painful death and because the fairy could not bring him back to life, she retired to Saint-Herbot.
It took three men to be able to carry one tooth of his.
I loved the way the story of Noah's ark was woven into this one, it makes for a good reading.

The guys showed that they were indeed gallant officers by going back to make the inscription.
I hope you are feeling okay now.

I have thought of so many ways the adventures of the gaint Hook Brass will end, one of which I think of him been a leader, a warrior etc, but Hook Brass dieing a painful death like this saddens my heart, I didn't see it coming 🙈.
I can't help but imagine the pains his godmother felt know she could not save him.

Preventing the British cadet from making their inscription on the Ceiling of the bar, same way they prevented you and your colleagues shows truly what goes around comes around, though your colleagues found a way to make their inscription 👏

Here it ends! All the stories can't have endings as the readers thoughts. I'm feeling sad for him he has hope that his anut can safe him but she can't having such a pain is deep. It's ending hits somehow. But if we see the depth here is too much to realize and too much to feel as lessons. Waiting for the next tale excitingly.

Ooh that's great to hear hope that passed year was adventurous day full of memories.

It was sad to hear that the giant Hok-Bras later died and his aunty was unable to save him. I still can't imagine how he was able to swallow a big ship. I could see from the picture how big his teeth were.
I really enjoyed the story but I don't like the way the story ended.

I could see that in your days as a Naval officer, you and your friends actually enjoyed it, and that you guys still remember what you did back then. It actually shows that you guys made a very good relationship.

This novel was very graphic, kind of that keeps you entertain, could really imagine the big men feeling the pain for the ship on his chest and the weight, towards the end painting the picture of how many men it took to carry one of this teeth, similar to a whale been turn apart inside ship by fishermen, very entertaining, keep it up ✌️

What a tragedy! Hok-Bras the giant just ended in this manner, unsung. His superior stature which was supposed to be his strength eventually ended up being his weakness. It's painful he died in pain and even his aunt could not save him this time. So sad!
I can see that many men had to carry just one of his teeth and he continued to make history even in death.
You guys proved you were indeed Force men when you went back to make the inscription, you exhibited bravery.

It is funny how this is not what I thought would happen. I was even thinking that Hok-Bras and his fairy godmother could maybe work things out and all of those but it is really sad that he lost his life.
Truly, the fairy godmother tried but she could not save him. I dislike the fact that Hok-Bras died a painful death
Nice story!

I wish the story ended differently, I was hoping for a love story. Anyways this was a fun story of “creation" and I like the “honesty" of the author 😆 Somewhere in my head I am thinking this story was written by a twelve year old child who had a very vivid and wild imagination.
Than you @vcelier for sharing.

Well, that was a very weird but interesting story. Not to insult the author, but the story felt like one my niece would come up with. It was full of twists and turns, and over the top events. The icing on the cake was the sudden inclusion of Noah, on top of all the other historical things in there. But it was still a fun ride overall.

A funny story about British cadets. How long ago it was.

Hok-Bras must have really been shocked that he was not even able to shout any longer and that is evident that is seen. After calming down under intense pressure, he believes so much in his aunt that she will actually be able to rescue him from it which is actually true also to an extent for him and also to the other way round. Well I will say one of the mistakes Hok-Bras actually made was the fact that he journey alone which should not be so actually. He should not have jouney alone if it I strongly believe he will not have ran into those troubles alones. That was a vital lesson I learnt concerning that also. "Noah also wanted, out of curiosity or to weigh his ark, to take some Hok-Bras teeth; for each one, he needed three vigorous sailors" Noah must have really weigh it so strong and bad that he must have believed that is only the way out to help Hok-Bras but I guess he was also wrong concerning that aspect. Till today I still marvel the wisdom Noah demonstrated in constructing that ark.
