The European Commission (EC) today announced it will invest 1 billion euros in the development of high performance computers by 2020 in an effort to compete with the United States and China.
"China is running, the US is running, we are running. We have to run a little faster, "said EU Commissioner for Research, Carlos Moedas.
A total of 1 billion euros is the EC's target, 486 million euros will come from the European Union, and the rest will be used to buy two supercomputers in 2019 or 2020, which researchers and companies can use to process large amounts of data.
Germany, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Spain, France, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Portugal, Slovenia and Switzerland are the countries that will participate in this project.
"Superstructures are already at the center of important progress and innovation in many areas that have a direct impact on the daily lives of European citizens and can help us to save energy and fight climate change more efficiently," he said.
