Transfagarasan road was build in the early '70s under Ceausescu's rule. In order to oppose and block the military invasion of the Soviet Union, he orders the construction of this road that crosses over the highest mountain of Romania that binds Transylvania and Wallachia. To build this road took a lot of sacrifices and many workers lost their lives in order to build it, but under such a strict ruler was not choice.

The road reaches 2.042 m altitude and because is so high is opened only from May until September. Last time when I visited it was in July, before climbing the mountain was 31 Cdegreese but up on the mountain was very cold, you could still see some parts covered with snow.

The view is breathtaking and is one of the most beautiful roads. If you like to drive is worth it to visit it, the corners are beautiful and perfect to drive. Top Gear visited it a few years ago and they said is one of the nicest roads... so you can add it to your list.

On top of the road, there are restaurants, cabanas, a beautiful lake with very clean water. You can take a break there, eat, buy some souvenirs and enjoy the scenery.
