A Cruise to Remember

in #travellast year

Four years ago I took my youngest child on her first cruise (Royal Caribbean's Liberty of the Seas). She was still young enough that she could go to the teen group on the ship. Since she is an introvert, she didn't want to go, but I walked her there and "pushed" her inside. She made a lot of friends and I didn't see much of her while we were on the ship.

One thing she wanted to do was take the cupcake decorating class. I am not crafty at all, and I talked to the person who would be teaching the class about it. He guaranteed that mine would look close enough to the samples he had on display that I would be happy with my results. He also said if I wasn't happy with my results, he would let me take the class again, for free. So, I signed us up and paid the fees for the two of us. After all, it's not that often your 17-year-old daughter wants to do something with mom!

We took the class and I was very happy with the results for both of us. Here are samples of our end results:

The downside of this whole experience was we had to take the cupcakes with us. That was seven each! We started giving them away to fellow passengers, and even gave some to our stateroom steward (who was very excited about it, because he said he's never gotten to taste anything from that shop!

It was a great experience that I got to share with my daughter. The other participants were also fun and we laughed at each other's mistakes.

We have not been on a cruise, yet. It's something that we may be overdue to try.

It took me too long to try cruising. Our first cruise was only 4 days long, because we were afraid we may not like it. We're sorry it was so short. Now it is our favorite vacation. I love the days at sea, because I can just relax - do only the activities I want. When in port, we can choose to go ashore (with or without a booked excursion) or stay on the ship. It depends on if we've been there before or not. If we've been there, we can decide if there's something new we wanted to do. Sometimes what's there doesn't appeal to us at the time.

The next cruise we are taking (next month) we plan to not go ashore, but just relax (haven't had a vacation in a while). However, we may change our minds on going ashore, because we are going to a port we haven't been to before.

My mother was the same way. My dad kept trying to get her to go on a cruise, but being afraid of water (she can't swim), she didn't want to go. He finally talked her into it and they haven't turned back! They once were on board a ship for 3 weeks and my mother said, "It wasn't even too long."

I went on a cruise once and loved it! I think you and Mrs. M will enjoy it.

Where did you go during the cruise ship? also those are decent decoration! I am still learning some techniques because I love cupcakes and gonna put them at my bakery😀. Fun activities with your daughter is great for emotional bonding, I do something like that often with my mom as well.

We went to Cozumel, Jamaica, and The Caymans. She didn't care much for Cozumel, she wouldn't get off the ship at Grand Cayman (rough seas and we had to tender, she was a bit afraid - that's ok, we spent the day together since all her friends were with their families on shore), and she loved Jamaica.

She is visiting us this week and those pictures popped up for memories for the day, and I shared them with her. She remembered and talked about how fun it was.

If you have a bakery, perhaps you can offer paid cup cake decorating events. I know when my mom owned a baker she did tamale socials which went over well.

Thanks for this awesome ideas! something like bakery class thing would be nice.

You're welcome! My mom hosted the tamale social event after the bakery closed at noon on a Saturday. It was fun and people loved going home with a dozen tamales they made with their own hands.
