OPEN SOURCE GAME for Urban Adventures - ATLAS

Atlas of Friendship.jpg

Atlas takes you places you would have never found on your own - and it gets you lost in places you thought you knew. Atlas encourage you to interact with the urban environment and the people in it in fun new ways, and to map your experience and your imagination.

You form a party of 2 or 3, and set out to play. Pull a card, follow it's instructions, and then map what you did. Rotate roles so everybody gets to do everything. Simple as that.

The game is designed to be played in any city in the world, and so far it has been played at least in San Francisco, New York City, Oakland, Honolulu, La Paz, Bolivia.

The maps players make during a game of Atlas can look like anything. Looking back at the map, I remember clearly what happened. Here's an example from one of our first games:

Atlas was designed over the course of 2 years by Richie Rhombus and I, with help from our friend Kate, and a lot of playtesters who were willing to get lost with us along the way.

We have decided to release Atlas in open source fashion. This way the most people can play - all you have to do is download it and print it.

Unsure if you want to try it? Here's an example of a card:

There are almost 50 cards so far.

Now that Atlas is open source, you can add your own cards if you want, and Atlas can continue to evolve! I would really love that. And I would really love it if you let me know if you play by sending me a picture of the map you make.

Thank yous to Steemians @kr583 and @doctorcrypto for contributing ideas for cards!

Still unsure what Atlas is like, or if you'd want to play?

Richie created a video series of urban adventure fantasies, kind of like what inspires Atlas:

You can download everything you need to play Atlas here.

Enjoy! And please let me know how it goes if you play!

If you want to know more about how the game was inspired, my good friend Stepha and I wrote an article about Atlas for the internet magazine Edge Effects.

Atlas of Friendship, the painting at the top of this post, was made by artist Richie Rhombus

Cool concept, and great work! Reminds of http://www.thewandersociety.com/, even though its absolutely not the same.

Thanks for turning me on to the wander society! Watching their video, their motivations and background are very similar to ours.

Their game - http://www.thewandersociety.com/DIY_Wander_Game.pdf - is kind of like a miniature Atlas. I'll keep exploring and poking around their website :)

Cool! Yeah, that’s what I thought as well. There is also a book on the topic. Received kind of bad reviews but I bought it anyway.

I’ll dig in to your universe as well! :)

:) Right on! If you end up playing Atlas, too, I'd love to hear how it goes!

I wrote an article that delves more into the political and philosophical history and our motivations for creating Atlas that wander society is also definitely coming from: http://edgeeffects.net/urban-adventure/

Alright! Will definitely read your article. Thanks!

Cool! I'm glad to see you guys are still doing this. I'll have to print it out!

Let us know how it goes! I would love to see the map your group makes.

Will do! :)

This looks totally awesome and I'm definitely going to try it! Will share a map once we have! Also after reading a few of your earlier posts I thought of a book you might like on working with young people with trauma backgrounds; its called The Boy Who Was Raised As A Dog, by Bruce Perry and Maia Szalavitz. If you haven't come across it before, its a great insight into the neurological impacts trauma can have on young people, and simple, holistic approaches to understanding and safety. I think you might like it.

I appreciate the book suggestion, thanks! And yes, please do share your map when you play! That would make me so happy. Maybe we can make an #atlas hashtag and steem can be the international house of atlas maps
