I lived in Malaysia's capital city as a child and was always fascinated by the name. It's such an odd sounding name and unlike most capital cities it has two words in it instead of one. I always wondered what it meant and then as a young adult I found out.
Kuala Lumpur was given it's name in the 1800's because the city is located at the meeting of two rivers. Kuala Lumpur means "muddy confluence". The initial settlement grew based on the tin mining industry which sprung up in the nearby jungle.
The two rivers that meet in Kuala Lumpur are the Klang and Gombak rivers.
A while ago I was strolling through the streets of central Kuala Lumpur marveling at how I recognized only that area and all the outer lying areas have changed from development beyond my recognition. I had been finding myself in cars with friends passing through areas and asking: "where are we?" It was always very interesting for me to be told where I was because I knew the ares but I couldn't recognize them with the new highways and buildings.
During my ramblings around the city center I found myself at the meeting place of the two rivers that give Kuala Lumpur its name. You can see this place in the first photo that I took. In the first picture you will notice the old and beautiful mosque which sits between the two rivers and in the second picture you will see some of the facelift work that has gone into transforming this area from a bit dodgy to clean and serene.
In the words of Malaysians: "Malaysia Boleh!" or "Malaysia Can Do!" 😁
