The Gunbarrel highway is one of Australia's most famous challenging four wheel drive tracks.
It is a very rough track, taking travellers through 1420 km of remote and beautiful desert areas in Western Australia to the middle of Australia
The road was completed in 1958. Many of the roads are gravel or natural earth.
The road recieves very little attention of the goverment and in fact, some sections have not been grade since the original days of construction.
Thats why the roadconditions can be very bad.
Some information:
Grading: difficult, only for experienced four wheel drivers.
1420 kilometers from Wiluna to Yulara.
Longest drive without fuelstation 485 km
Permit is required at Ngaanyatjurruku council.
Camping: bushcamp. Bring your own food, water and fuel. Be self sufficient.
Take enough spare tires.
We did the track last year and we really enjoyed it.
It took 3 days to get from west to the middle of Australia.
We drove through a very isolated and unpopulated part of Australia. We did not see anyone. that 3 days.
We had nice bushcamps, sunsets and sunrises and in de evenig an amazing sky full of stars.
Despite 1 flat tire, we did not have any troubles on our way. The roadcontitions were not that bad. Or maybe we are very good and experienced drivers.
We were lucky to see some camels on our way.
After 3 days we finally reached the center of Australia. The Katta Tjuta Olga's.
What a reward.
What a great experience. Just the two of us.
For three days, the world was so very peaceful
Looks like so much fun. I plan on some 4wding in Australia in 2019.
Cool. Where do you want to go? Hopefully we will do the Birdsville track in the Simpsondessert next time.
Not sure yet. Will depend on the tip of the year. If winter perhaps up to the cape then across to the Kimberly.
Nice pictures! I uvtoted and will follow you from now!
What a nice post! Very challenging to explore it ourselves.
