These towns, carved into rugged cliffs overlooking the sea, are connected by hiking trails and a scenic train line. The region’s beauty was even the inspiration for Pixar’s Luca, which gave us some great nostalgic vibes as we explored.
We started our journey at La Spezia station, where we caught a train to Riomaggiore, the first of the five towns. From there, we embarked on a mix of hiking and train-hopping to experience all five in a single day—an ambitious but unforgettable challenge.
Our first big walk was the iconic Via dell’Amore (Lover’s Lane), the gentle and romantic trail from Riomaggiore to Manarola. The views of the coastline here were absolutely jaw-dropping, and it was the perfect stretch to ease into the day with lots of photos and relaxed steps.
From Manarola, the family opted for the convenience of the train to the next towns, but when we arrived at Corniglia, I saw an opportunity. While the rest of the crew passed on the steep flight of stairs, I took on the hike to Vernazza—a decision I both loved and nearly regretted! The trail offered some of the most epic views of the coast, but by the time I reached Vernazza, I was drenched in sweat and had to buy a fresh change of clothes to keep the day going.
Our final stop was Monterosso al Mare, famous for its beach. It was the perfect place to unwind after all the exploring. We also learned that ferries run between the towns, offering another scenic way to experience the area, but by then, we were ready to head back by train to La Spezia and drive home.
Cinque Terre offered us a day packed with beauty, family memories, and just enough challenge to make it all the more rewarding. Something tells me this won’t be our last visit—we definitely left a piece of our hearts on those cliffs by the sea.
