Langkawi Weekender - Duty Free Shopping

Duty-free Shopping at Billion Duty-Free Mall

My friend insists on taking me to do some duty free shopping. Honestly I wasn’t looking forwards to bringing back anything since I hadn’t paid extra for check-in luggage.

I leave my mobile phone in the hotel so I actually don’t have any photos of my entire day out on the island! What a bummer:(

I drive around the island and there are about a zillion duty-free shops for almost anything u can imagine.

Did you know you can purchase a new Mercedes SLC in Langkawi for just RM175k ? That’s crazy right? The salesman tells me that most people keep it here on Langkawi in storage for three years before bringing it back for good to the mainland. The tax on cars is so high in KL , the market price for the same car is about half a million ringgit right now. He told me most mainlanders will buy in langkawi and take it to KL for three months a year. You are allowed 90 days a year. So they will drive it in KL from October to December then January to March the following year. Then in three years they will finally bring it back to KL and be taxed on the depreciated value of the car then.

How weird! So next time if the guy u are dating has a nice expensive continental car only three months in a year, you know where he got it from!

The chocolates here are cheap and so is the alcohol. A bottle of dewars 18 is RM 188 duty free. On the mainland RM 349.00!
Can’t believe how crazy tax can be!

I get a carton of ciggies for my mom at the duty free price of RM105 for 12 boxes of dunhill lights which at the mainland price of RM17 per box which means RM204 in total. Wow that is pretty good for chain smokers.

Enough shopping for the day, I get back to the hotel and enjoy the beautiful sunset
