HIDDEN TREASURE!

in #travel7 years ago

Most people do not even know of the existence, Italians included!

Altar, pulpit, stoups, bas reliefs, statues: nearly everything inside the Church of the Realmonte Salt Mine, in ‘contrada’ Scavuzzo, is carved out of rock salt and stone.

A mass in memory of Saint Barbara is held on December 4th every year in this white, underground church.

Most of the eight hundred faithful that gather inside are miners and their families, celebrating their protector, the patron of all underground workers – who on that day truly feel they are the “salt of the earth”.
