Iceland #4 : The Sun That Never Sets

During the Icelandic summer, the sun never sets. This picture (above) was taken in July this summer. We had eaten dinner and walked around town, and by the time we settled down back at the hostel, we realized it was midnight! This happened almost every night of the trip. Being used to the sun setting around 9 PM in the States, I always forgot that in Iceland I couldn't use the daylight as a clock! It never got dark, so we were always confused when we saw the actual time. This photo was take at about midnight, the 'darkest' it was going to get. The sun may look like it is setting, but really, it is not. From this point, the sun just started rising again. It never went down past the horizon, instead it teased us by shining bright 24 hours a day. I loved it. There is something so magical and so mystical about a sun that never sets. It felt wonderful to bathe in light for two weeks straight; no night, just day. I loved it.

The lowest the Icelandic sun will get. From here it will rise again, never dropping below the horizon.

How interesting! I like the Iceland blog series!!

This is so cool. I never thought about how he sun not setting would really mess you up! I would love to experience the midnight sun. I wonder how it feels in winter when the sun doesn't rise?

Thank you! I'd love to go back in Winter!!

@originalworks. That is so crazy! How long did it take to get used to the light?!
