About Bagan

Bagan is an ancient city in central Myanmar, southwest of Mandalay. Stans on the eastern banks of the Ayeyarwady River, it’s known for the Bagan Archaeological Area, where more than 2,000 Buddhist monuments tower over green plains. Holy sites around Old Bagan include ornate Ananda Temple, built in 1091 and topped with a golden stupa. Nearby is the vast 12th-century Dhammayangyi Temple.

The thousands of temples that are spread across the plains of Bagan are the most impressive testament to the religious devotion of Myanmar’s people and rulers over the centuries. They combine to form one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia and provide views quite unlike anywhere else on earth.

History Of Bagan

The Bagan archaeological zone is one of the largest and most important historical sites in South East Asia. It is located in the dry zone of Central Burma, on the East bank of the Ayeyarwaddy river. Also known as the Land of a Thousand Temples, the ancient kingdom of Bagan in Myanmar is symbol of Burmese religion, history and culture. This lesson gives a crash course on the history of the Bagan kingdom as well as facts about important architectural works of its ancient capital.

Places To Visit In Bagan

.Ananda Pahto

With its 170ft high gold corn cob hti shimmering across the plains, Ananda is one of the finest, largest, best preserved and most revered of all Bagan temples. Thought to have been built between 1090 and 1105 by King Kyanzittha, this perfectly proportioned temple heralds the stylistic end of the early Bagan period and the beginning of the middle period. The temple was damaged during the 2016 earthquake and was under repair at the time of research, but it remains open for visitors.

.Dhammayangyi Pahto

Visible from all parts of Bagan, this massive, walled, 12th-century temple about 1600ft east of Shwesandaw is infamous for its mysterious, bricked-up inner passage ways and cruel history. It’s said that King Narathu built the temple to repay for his sins: he strangle his father and brother to death and executed one of his wives, an Indian princess, for practising Hindu rituals. The best preserved of Bagan's temples, it features detailed mortar work in its upper levels.

.Shwezigon Paya

At the western end of Nyaung U, this big, beautiful zedi is the town’s main religious site, and is most famous for its link with Myanmar's main nat (spirits). Lit up impressively at dusk, the gilded zedi sits on three rising terraces. Enamelled plaques in panels around the base of the zedi illustrate scenes from the Jataka. At the cardinal points, facing the terrace stairways, are four shrines, each housing a 13ft high bronze standing buddha.

.Shwesandaw Paya

Shwesandaw Paya.jpg
Bagan’s famous sunset viewing spot, Shwesandaw is a graceful white pyramid style pagoda with steps leading past five terraces to the circular stupa top, with good 360 degree views. Its top terrace is roomy, which is just as well considering the numbers of camera toting travellers who arrive before sunset. If you go during the day, you’ll likely be alone. As it was badly damaged in the 2016 earthquake and by heavy rain in 2017, it wasn't possible to climb Shwesandaw at research time.
