Miyajima Island is well worth the quick trip on the local ferry. Try to go at high tide when the O-torii Gate looks like it is floating in the water. The Itsukushima Shrine is beautiful and very interesting as are the surrounding hills. You need at least a half day on this beautiful island.

Miyajima still has many treasures I've yet to encounter. I still haven't done high tide so I'm thinking next trip I may just stay at a resort there and get an early start.
