We hardly ever rent a car on our travels, sometimes a motorbike or a bike to discover but mainly we use public transport or shuttle services if the public transport is not very good. Depends on the country. In Sri Lanka it's quite easy to travel around the country withouth having a car of you own in our opinion.
So many countries have such wonderful public transportation. Sadly, the United States, where I live, is not one of them.
