SketchTravel – the narrow streets of a Spanish hilltop town

Winding streets and aging dwellings

The small walkable city of Arcos, Spain

This is yet another view of this remarkable and picturesque oldtown in southern Spain – one of its famed "pueblo blanco" or white towns due to all the whitewashed walls. This Andalusia town sits on a high outcrop of rock, so that there are terrific views over the surrounding countryside and the Guadalete River. These streets were somewhat steep as we walked the length of it. I love how the meandering nature of them offers continuous changing views of the place.

My sketch with watercolor added

This drawing was done using brown permanent ink in a quill pen, so that I could make thicker or thinner lines as I applied pressure to the pen. A great way to avoid monotony of line weight. The watercolor washes were added later.
