Season 1 of Loki was a television masterpiece and I thought it will be very hard to outdo it. Especially considering the fact that the showrunner of the first season left. But I am glad to have been mistaken. Eric Martin did a fantastic job following in Kate Herron footsteps. So now the god of mischief is back with a flourish.
The second season picks up right where the first season ended, Loki is back at the TVA, but now it's a different TVA and Möbius and B-15 don't recognize Loki anymore. What an awkward situation and heartbreaking. I really felt for Loki as he lost his only friends. But obviously that obstacle will be overcome. The biggest obstacle of the season is the TVA itself. What is their role if not to prune timelines in order protect the sacred timeline? Well, they have many technical problems on their way to solve their biggest problem yet. How to protect the multiverse.
They will run into many obstacles, some are more impressive than others. And their solutions are either really interesting or cool or they get left behind untreated. This is my biggest criticism of the show, it is not a very coherent season. Some plotlines feel important, but they get left behind unexplained or they feel like they weren't that important from the start with. The pace of the show is also a bit uneven with the middle of the season dragging a bit. But all of this doesn't matter because of the ending.
Yes, the ending is spectacular and the best thing about this show and about the MCU in recent years. It completes Loki's personal arc and personal development story in a perfect manner. Plus the Norse Mythology amazing reference at the end was lost on no one. It was just perfect. I really hope that this Loki will meet our Thor one day, but I don't think it will happen.
When it comes to acting obviously Tom Hiddleston knocks it out of the park. He is just brilliant and perfect for the role. He made it his own. He is the perfect balance of charismatic, mischievous, good and lonely and afraid. He is just good at being bad. He is just such a brilliant actor that it is hard to come close to him. Plus I love the new powers that he is showing here. So cool and so Loki.
But one actor manages to shine in his shadow and that is Ke Huy Quan as Ouroboros. His character is super smart and quirky and the actor brings a lot of personal charm and adorable quirkiness and speed to it. He just manages to shine and be super likable in every scene that he is in.
Last season I really liked Sophia Di Martino's Sylvie, but this season she really doesn't have much to do. She's just there and people go to her for help from some reason which is I never really see as necessary except for once. She doesn't cooperate much with Loki which is a shame because those were her best moments in the previous season.
Owen Wilson's Möbius and Wunmi Mosaku B-15 are as great as ever. But this season is the Loki show and I feel that everyone are less important than him. I am glad we got to see more of Eugene Cordero's Casey. He is delightful and I love the wink to the real world that his story has. But yeah, this season it’s the Hiddleston show.
Maybe it is because of the brilliant storyline and character development that Loki himself has, Jonathan Majors didn't really impress me this much during this season. Even though he plays two characters. He plays them very well, but it is really hard to outshine Hiddleston, impossible. He doesn't even manage to be his equal and I think at this point, no one is too sorry to see him go.
This season clearly wasn’t perfect, but it had a perfect ending. Even a perfecting ending for the Loki character. Even though I want to see him again badly, any variant of him will do. The ending is so perfect that it literally outshines everything about the show and just leaves you with a satisfied and gratifying feeling.
