Thursday musings: Streaming on twitch and going live posts on hive.

Twitch recap - The last year of streaming.

Twitch recaps are here and they are a cool little thing twitch does that gives you an nice roundup of what you've done on twitch both as a viewer and a streamer.

Here's my roundup for the year, it's been pretty decent in all honestly, I have over a year of consistent steady streaming up until IRL stresses broke me, where I had a extended break to return stronger than ever streaming even more often. Then IRL stresses broke me again.

Now I'm just about getting back to consistent streaming but overall the year has been a decent one.

I'm surprised Path of exile is my top game, considering I've been burnt out on that game for so long, it seems I've still played it far more than anything else.
Dwarven Realm is a great game as well and I've just started playing season 5 that started recently so that's keeping me busy for the next few weeks.

Live content is content but hive doesn't mesh well with it honestly.

The reason 'going live' posts don't work on HIVE is because once the live stream ends the post become worthless dead weight on the chain.
The content is GONE at that point. The posts just becomes another copy pasted piece of bloat. It's really bad honestly.

Lately there has been a lot of down voting happening to a lot of 'going live' posts here on HIVE and frankly I can understand why.

90% of 'going live' posts end up being the same copy pasted post with very little difference in content with a embedded twitch player.
The content only exists in that post for the length of the stream, which for the less hardcore streamers could be less than an hour.

Quite rightly it can be seen as spam, low effort content.. because the content is no longer there when the stream ends.

Rather than complain about the down votes, I'm here to offer solutions and lead by example.

I have yet to be down voted for any of my 'going live' posts and I like to believe that the reason is because of the following.

  1. I post no more than one post per day per unique stream.
  2. I make meaningful alterations to the post text, talking about what I'm doing on a given stream, even if it's just a couple of lines.
  3. Probably the most significant thing, I update my posts with a link to a YouTube VOD of the entire stream after my stream has ended!

Honestly point 3 is likely the main thing that's keeping me from being down voted.

It's simple really, My posts become evergreen, the content that was once live is now there 'forever', the post doesn't suddenly become worthless with absolutely no content to offer.

I could go even further and upload to 3SPEAK rather than YouTube BUT there is an issue with that. Currently 3SPEAK has a 5GB limit on upload size which makes any stream over 2 hours not possible to upload with splitting it up. So it's not an option in my opinion at this time.
Perhaps once the SPK network is actually fully up and running it'll be possible.

At this point, we all have to make changes and put in more effort and it's not a lot of effort either!

After every live stream, I export the VOD from twitch to my YouTube channel via twitches built in tools, Once the video becomes public I update my corresponding 'going live' post with a link to that YouTube video, usually the morning after my stream.

It's a simple set and forget thing you do after each stream and it makes a world of difference to your posts.

So if you are a streamer I suggest you try uploading your VODs to YouTube and update your posts with links to the VOD.
Make HIVE posts better so people DON'T have a reason to down vote it.

Every vote helps to ensure HIVE is decentralized and secure! Please consider voting for me!
