Elizabeth II grants Harry and Meghan a "transition" to their "new life"

Queen Elizabeth II, sympathetic to the desire for independence of her grandson Harry and his wife Meghan, agreed Monday with the couple, during a crisis meeting, on a "transition period" towards the "new life" they wish to lead between the United Kingdom and Canada.

Five days after the thunderclap announcement by the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, which sent shock waves across the country, the 93-year-old sovereign, who the press called "wounded," gathered a close family council around the couple at her home in Sandringham, eastern England.

She issued a statement on his behalf, a method of communication reserved for exceptional cases, giving an idea of the storm that the British monarchy is going through in the face of the 35-year-old prince's desire to set sail and earn money by remaining a member of the royal family.

She announces that she "fully supports Harry and Meghan's desire to create a new life". "Although we would have preferred them to remain full-time members of the Royal Family, we respect and understand their desire to lead a more independent life," the Queen said in a statement from Buckingham Palace.

"Harry and Meghan have made it clear that they do not want to be dependent on public funds," and agreement has been reached on a "transition period" during which they will live between the U.K. and Canada, she says.

There remains "work for my family" to do on these "complex issues," the Queen added, following a meeting with her son Prince Charles and her eldest grandson William to bring the British monarchy out of the "Megxit" crisis.

The Queen has asked that final decisions be found "in the coming days" to define the unprecedented status claimed by the couple, who want to keep a foot in the monarchy (and certain benefits) while earning the right to earn money and live part of the year in North America.

The announcement of Harry, sixth in the order of succession to the Queen, and Meghan, a 38-year-old former mixed-blood American actress, is not going down well in the United Kingdom.

Among the issues to be decided at Buckingham Palace is the amount of the financial endowment that Prince Charles allocates to the couple from his personal reserve. So far, Meghan and Harry have only officially renounced their share of the royal allowance, which represents only 5% of their income.

It must also be determined what police protection they will be able to enjoy and how they will be able to earn a living as celebrities without conflict of interest with their royal rank.

In recent months, Harry and Meghan had made no secret of their discomfort with the tabloid attacks on their lifestyle and their difficulty in finding their place in the family.

The prince had distanced himself from his brother. He had moved out of Kensington Palace where he had previously lived with William and Kate and had broken with the foundation where the two couples worked together. In a television interview in October, he said he and William followed "different paths" and that their relationship sometimes went through "bad times.

Displaying a united front on Monday, the two sons of Prince Charles and Lady Di issued a joint statement denouncing a "false story" published by the press about their relationship and the "offensive and potentially dangerous" use of the words "inflammatory.

If they do not specify the newspaper concerned, the Times reports that Harry felt rejected by the royal family because of the "aggressive" attitude of his brother William, who would never have accepted his wife Meghan and would have repeatedly put the couple in their place.

If they did not get satisfaction, Harry and Meghan could give an unsuccessful television interview with potentially disastrous consequences, several newspapers reported Monday. It's reminiscent of the devastating 1995 interview with Lady Di, in which she talked about the difficulties of her life in the "firm", as the royal family is known.

The image of the royal family is already tarnished by the ties of Prince Andrew, the Queen's second son, with the American financier Jeffrey Epstein, accused of sexual assault on minors and who died in prison in August 2019.
