This morning, while we were busy getting into the car to take our kids to school, we saw a commotion, two geese were running around the road, surrounding a third who has obviously been hit by a car, and was lying on her back, with it legs still twitching. The cars were just driving around it.
I went up to it, not understanding why nobody stopped to help the poor creature. I took it out of the road, and put it on a nearby grass. One of the women entering the house offered to phone the humane society. I saw that it was too late for it, since its skull had been broken, once of the wings was twisted, and it was bleeding from a wound in the back.
Me and a girl from the yard sat with it for a bit, giving it what comfort we could. After a while, I had to leave.
I still feel sorry for the poor thing, but at least it did not die alone. I am angry with the person who drove into it, and just left it there.
The world can be a cruel place.
